Understanding Where Cold Spots Develop

Even if a whole room becomes very warm during same day heat treatment, bed bugs still have time to remain undisturbed against the flooring or the upholstery of objects. To Nashville residents, this begs the questions of how the exterminator measures in these corners and what can they do if those places do not become warm enough.

Inspecting Areas that are Likely to be colder than the Room

Prior to the heat treatment, the operators should take time to find likely harborage points and consider if they are objects that may resist warming. Seams along upholstery joints, thick settees, stacked goods in drawers, corners along bare flooring and objects against exterior walls are examples. An open living room has different logistics from a smaller room shared between two units. Need urgent help? Sensors inside Possible Refuges to Measure the Progress of the ...
... Heat Source

Temperature probes are essential tools when targeting cold spots, as their location and repeated use will measure the progress of the treatments. Probes can be attached on thermocouple wire that is threaded along possible harborage points, or the technician might use remotely sensed heat indicators.

Suffice it to say, a single wall thermometer near a space heater is no substitute for making multiple temperature readings around the structure that is being heated. Operators should note that cold spot treatment is not about the surface temperature of an item. Infrared sensing devices that measure infrared radiance from an object cannot see into it either. The sensing devices are important to identify if the interior of the room is becoming uniformly warm.

Adjusting Equipment to Create Better Circulation

If a monitored location remains stubbornly cool during treatment, the operator may alter the airflow of the equipment. Adjustments could include changing the positioning of space heaters or fans, piling objects out of the way for a better flow of air, using additional heat banks, or moving furnishings that allow circulation to occur underneath. This may include rolling a settee away from a wall to expose the underside of the cushions to the forced warm air. Each adjustment then requires test temperature readings, as another item may have been nudged into a cooler spot.

Judging Time and Warmth Based on Readings

Each heat source should have operating instructions developed from experience regarding the time and placement required for successful results. A reading that registers warm may be encouraging, but a single probe will not confirm that all of the targeted areas are receiving sufficient heat.
Because each spot should be considered for its own value, an inspector should not rely upon a general assessment of the room as being warm. Following up heat treatment procedures according to the instructions of the equipment used will allow the operator to make sure that even the slowest warming spot has received sufficient heat for the designated length of time.

Reviewing and Following Instructions on Cold Spot Treatment

The client can request a review of the equipment used and the monitoring instructions, and should also be given special directions by the operator for preparing the site, items that are vulnerable to heat, re-entry guidelines and inspection routines.

The use of heat does not create an enduring barrier against re-infestation, so cold spot monitoring should always be combined with procedures to identify if new pests are arriving. Follow up observations and intermittent use of bed bug monitoring devices can provide reassurance that an enclosure method has been effective, even when an assurance of completely heated rooms is not available.
