The Fence That Outlasted The Storm
The Fence That Outlasted the Storm
When the spring rain came early to Mount Pleasant, Dana Mercer stood at her kitchen window and counted the leaning pickets along her back property line. Eleven years earlier, her late husband had built that fence himself, using pine boards from the hardware store and a borrowed post-hole digger. Now it looked tired, and so did she.
Her neighbor, Gloria, had a simple suggestion. "Call the people who fixed my gate after last September's storm," she said. "They don't guess. They dig down until they find solid ground."
Dana wasn't sure what that meant until the crew arrived on a humid Tuesday morning. The lead installer, a patient man named Marcus, walked the property line with her before touching a single board. He pointed to the places where the soil had shifted after weeks of heavy rain, and where salt air had started to wear on the old hardware. "Most of your trouble isn't the boards," ...
... he said. "It's what's underneath them."
That idea stayed with Dana as the team set new posts deeper than she expected. Marcus explained that sandy Lowcountry soil moves with every wet season, so each post had to be anchored firmly enough to resist that shifting. He said a fence on the coast has to be built differently than one a few hours inland, because humidity, sun, and storm winds are harder on every board.
Dana chose cedar after hearing that it naturally resists insects and humidity. Marcus mentioned that pressure-treated pine would also work well on a tighter budget, as long as it was stained on a regular schedule. What she appreciated most was that nobody pushed her toward the most expensive option.
Over the next three days, the old fence came down and a new cedar privacy fence went up, straight and sturdy. On the final evening, Dana walked the perimeter and ran her hand along the smooth boards. Across the yard, Gloria gave a wave.
"Built for the coast," Dana said quietly. She had seen the phrase on a company website, but standing beside her new fence, she finally understood what it meant.
