Small jobs are cheaper when they're grouped and described clearly. Before asking for quotes, note:

- your suburb, and every job in one list so it can be done in one visit
- quantities and sizes: how many doors, drawers, screens, palings or blinds
- product names or links for flat-pack, and whether boxes are upstairs
- parts you already have: hinges, brackets, fixings, the original paint
- wall type (plaster, brick, tile) for shelves, mirrors and blinds
- access, parking and any tenancy or inspection deadline

Electrical, plumbing and structural work needs a licensed tradie, not a handyman. In NSW, residential jobs over $5,000 (incl. GST) need a contractor licence, which you can check on Service NSW.

Ask for an itemised written quote covering parts, any call-out fee and GST before work starts.

A few extra tips: write down the date and time of every quote request, keep the quotes side by side, and ask each business how long the job will take and what is included. Never pay the full amount upfront, and take photos of the finished work before you pay the final invoice.
