Introduction

Somaskandar is the sacred form of Lord Shiva seated together with Goddess Uma and their child Skanda, also known as Murugan. Deeply loved across Tamil Nadu, this form shows the Lord not only as the supreme ascetic but also as the head of a divine family. It is one of the most celebrated images in Tamil temple sculpture and has been worshipped for well over a thousand years.

For devotees and art lovers alike, Somaskandar is a symbol of harmony, family and divine grace. Somaskandar is available in idol brass and bronze at Gold Plating Art Studio

1. Who Is Somaskandar and What Does the Form Represent?

The name Somaskandar comes from “Sa-Uma-Skanda,” meaning Shiva together with Uma and Skanda. Shiva sits in a relaxed royal posture with one leg folded and the other hanging down. He usually has four arms: two hold an axe and a deer, while the others show the gestures of protection and blessing. Goddess Uma sits beside him, often holding a lotus. Between them is the child Skanda, seated or standing, who completes the family. The form presents the Lord as a loving father and protector, not ...
... only a distant yogi.

2. The Symbolism Behind Somaskandar’s Form

The composition of Somaskandar is rich in meaning. Shiva represents pure consciousness, Uma stands for divine energy and compassion, and Skanda represents the wisdom and courage that arise when the two unite. Placing the child between the parents shows that the divine family is one whole, bound together by love. The deer and axe in Shiva’s hands suggest the mind’s restlessness and the cutting away of attachment. Together the family teaches devotees that spiritual life and family life can walk side by side.

3. Mythology and Origins of Somaskandar

In Tamil tradition, Skanda was born from the sparks of fire that came from Shiva’s third eye, created to destroy the demon Soorapadman and protect the gods. He was raised by the Karthigai maidens and later joined his parents on Mount Kailash. The Somaskanda form celebrates this union of father, mother and son. Temple tradition at Tiruvarur holds that Lord Vishnu worshipped a Somaskanda image, which passed to Indra and later to the king Muchukunda, who established it at Tiruvarur. The Pallava kings of Kanchipuram gave the form special prominence in their temples, and it spread widely in the centuries that followed.

4. Somaskandar Temples and Festivals

The Thyagaraja Temple at Tiruvarur is the most famous centre of the Somaskanda tradition. Its Aazhi Therottam, one of the grandest chariot festivals in Tamil Nadu, draws devotees in large numbers. Pallava temples such as the Kailasanathar Temple at Kanchipuram also feature Somaskanda panels carved on the wall behind the sanctum. Kanda Sashti, which celebrates Skanda’s victory over Soorapadman, and Pradosham, the sacred evening observance for Shiva, are important occasions for Somaskandar worship.

5. Somaskandar in Pallava and Chola Temple Art

Somaskandar is one of the defining images of Pallava and Chola art. Under the Pallavas, the form was carved in stone behind the lingam in many Shiva shrines, a feature that became a signature of their temples. Under the Cholas, graceful processional bronze images of Somaskandar were created for temple festivals, when the deity is carried through the streets. These works remain admired for their serene faces, fluid posture and balanced family composition.

Conclusion

Somaskandar is a beautiful reminder that the divine is present in love, family and togetherness. From Pallava stone carvings to the festivals of Tiruvarur, this form continues to inspire devotion and a sense of harmony in all who see it.
