How Does Endodontic Therapy Save A Damaged Or Infected Tooth?

Endodontic therapy, commonly known as a root canal, removes damaged or infected tissue from inside a tooth so the tooth can stay in your mouth. Pulling a tooth may seem simpler, but keeping the natural tooth preserves your bite, protects neighboring teeth as well as avoids the need for a replacement.
What Goes Wrong Inside the Tooth
Under the enamel & dentin sits the pulp, a soft tissue made of nerves & blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack, repeated dental work or a hard knock can let bacteria reach it. Once the pulp is infected, it cannot heal by itself. The infection can spread through the root tip into the jawbone & form an abscess, causing swelling, lingering pain as well as sensitivity to hot or cold. Relieve tooth pain with root canal ...

How the Procedure Works
The dentist numbs the area & makes a small opening in the top of the tooth. Fine instruments remove the infected pulp & shape the narrow canals inside each root. The canals are rinsed with a disinfecting solution to clear out bacteria, then filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha & sealed. Most cases take one or two visits as well as the procedure feels similar to getting a large filling.
Why Saving the Tooth Matters
A tooth that has been cleaned out no longer has a living nerve, but it still anchors firmly in the jawbone. The surrounding ligament & bone continue to support it, so chewing works as usual. Removing the infection also stops the spread of bacteria as well as often resolves the pain that sent the person to the dentist in the first place.
What Has Changed in Recent Years
Modern endodontic therapy relies on imaging & magnification that were rare a generation ago. Cone beam CT scans show the root anatomy in three dimensions, which helps dentists find extra canals that flat X-rays miss. Surgical microscopes give a clear view of tiny canal openings. Rotary nickel-titanium files shape canals more smoothly than hand files as well as electronic apex locators measure canal length accurately. Some practices also use regenerative methods in young patients whose roots are still developing.
Restoring the Tooth Afterward
A treated tooth can become brittle, so most back teeth need a crown or a strong filling to prevent fracture. Getting this final restoration placed promptly matters, because a temporary filling can leak as well as let bacteria back in.
Recovery and Follow-Up
Mild soreness for a few days is normal & usually responds to over-the-counter pain relievers. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until the final restoration is in place. A follow-up X-ray months later confirms that the bone around the root is healing. With regular brushing, flossing as well as checkups, a treated tooth can last for decades.
