Portable Vs Benchtop Humidity Calibration: When Field Calibration Actually Makes Sense
Humidity sensors drift — a few percent RH a year is normal, more in dusty or chemically active air. The question is whether you pull each sensor out and bring it to a benchtop humidity generator, or take a portable calibrator to the sensor. For a handful of lab references, the bench wins. For dozens of wall-mounted transmitters across a plant, cleanroom or warehouse, field calibration is often the only approach that gets done at all.
When does portable humidity calibration make sense?
It makes sense when the sensor is hard to remove, when removing it breaks a controlled environment (cleanroom, stability room, cold store), when downtime per sensor matters more than squeezing the last tenth of a percent of uncertainty, and when you have many sensors of moderate accuracy class to keep on schedule. It makes less sense for primary reference hygrometers or sub-1% RH work, which belong on a benchtop two-pressure or divided-flow generator.
How do the two approaches compare?
Factor Portable calibration Benchtop calibration
Best achievable RH uncertainty ~±2% RH (field-practical) Down to ~±0.5% RH or ...
... better on precision generators
Sensor downtime Minutes at the installed location Hours to days including transport
Disturbance to controlled areas Minimal — sensor stays in place Opens the process; may need re-qualification
RH range Typically ~40–95% RH working band Often 10–98% RH with tighter control
Throughput High — many sensors per day, in situ Low — limited by chamber slots and stabilisation
Best for HVAC, cleanroom, warehouse, cold-store, stability-room transmitters Reference hygrometers, low-uncertainty work, arbitration
What accuracy can a portable humidity calibrator realistically hold?
A compact field unit such as an 8 L temperature and humidity calibrator typically holds ±2% RH uniformity and ±0.5 °C temperature stability in the 40–95% RH band, stabilising in 20–30 minutes from a cold start. That is enough to calibrate the ±2–3% RH class transmitters used in HVAC, cleanroom and storage monitoring — which is most of the installed base. It is not a substitute for a national-standard humidity generator.
Lots of wall-mounted RH transmitters to keep in calibration? An 8 L compact temperature and humidity calibrator with battery backup and NABL-traceable certificates lets one technician work through them on-site. Get a quote.
