Seven Days Of Purple Lipstick

As religious readers of this blog know, I've sported a different shade of purple, berry-tinged lipstick every day for the past week—and on each day, at least one person has asked me if I was wearing Tom Ford's new lipstick. And so, I broke it out for day six. Without further ado, I give you Black Orchid.

The Lipstick: Tom Ford Private Blend Lipcolor in Black Orchid.

The Application: Black Orchid is not as dark as you'd think it would be. Not really a deep purple, it's more like a brick red with some deeper aubergine accents once it's on the skin. For those of you who swore by Clinique's Black Honey back in the nineties, consider this the richer, slightly more extravagant version.

The Upside: Considering that I prefer red- rather than blue-toned purples, this was an obvious winner. It also got rave reviews from the fashion set during the shows yesterday—so much so that when I defected to my signature red pout for Style.com's tenth anniversary party last night (it just looked better with my outfit, OK?), people actually inquired as to the whereabouts of the purple shade I had been wearing earlier.

... Downside: None to speak of, really—except that because Tom Ford's beauty offerings do not include lip liners, I had to go with a pencil I found in my coffers that was a little too dark for the glossy pigment. (Note to Tom Ford: Please get on that).

The Final Word: The in-demand color delivered—and pulling the beautiful ivory and gold rectangular bullet out of my purse never got old.

My first backstage appointment yesterday was at 9:00 a.m. The true purple pigment that I wore definitely freaked out some Sunday morning F train riders. But no matter. Beauty stops for no one. See my full review below.

The Lipstick: Make Up For Ever's Rouge Artist Intense in #49.

The Application: As previously mentioned, this lipstick is dark purple—more purple than any of the others so far, so tracing with MUFE's Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil in 12C Matte Dark Plum was a necessary step one. The lipstick itself goes on pretty opaque with a single coat, but I doubled up for precision purposes.

The Upside: Boasting 50 percent more pigment than any other lipstick on the market is a pretty big claim, but as far as I can tell this lipstick delivers. Once you put it on, it's on. I probably only broke out my hand mirror three times to make sure it hadn't moved, versus an hourly check up on days prior. Also, Elisa Sednaoui complimented the color backstage at DVF yesterday afternoon, which is obviously a plus.

The Downside: I'm not sold on the color, despite the high-profile compliment. It has more blue than red undertones, which doesn't jibe with my olive complexion. It looked a little too goth for my liking. MUFE's #48 is likely a better fit.

The Final Word: Great staying power and excellent pigmentation for anyone who can pull off the color.
