Diving Zenobia is one of the most distinctive underwater experiences available in Cyprus, combining maritime history, impressive wreck scenery and the opportunity to encounter Mediterranean marine life. Resting beneath the waters near Larnaca, the MS Zenobia has developed an international reputation among wreck divers. Its enormous size, unusual position on the seabed and extensive structure make it a site that can offer something different across multiple dives.

The Zenobia was a Swedish-built roll-on/roll-off ferry that sank during her maiden voyage in 1980. Problems with the vessel eventually resulted in her sinking off the coast of Larnaca. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities associated with the sinking. Today, the wreck remains remarkably substantial, allowing divers to appreciate the scale of a large commercial ferry beneath the surface.

One of the first things divers notice when approaching the wreck is its sheer size. The Zenobia measures approximately 172 metres in length, making it significantly larger than many wrecks visited by recreational divers. The vessel lies on its port side, creating ...
... an unusual underwater landscape where familiar parts of a ship appear at unexpected angles.
Depth is an important consideration when planning a Zenobia dive. The upper sections of the wreck can be reached at depths suitable for appropriately qualified recreational divers, while deeper areas extend towards the seabed. Because different sections sit at different depths, dive plans should always reflect certification level, experience, gas consumption and individual comfort in deeper water.

Visibility around the wreck can be very good, allowing divers to gain a clear impression of the vessel’s immense proportions. On suitable days, parts of the structure may become visible during the descent, creating a memorable introduction to the site. As with all sea diving, however, visibility can vary depending on weather, water movement and other environmental conditions.

Diving Zenobia is not simply about reaching the wreck and swimming around it. There are numerous external features to examine, and its size means it is impossible to appreciate everything during a single recreational dive. This makes repeat dives particularly worthwhile, as different routes can reveal completely different perspectives on the vessel.
One of the wreck’s most recognisable features is its cargo of vehicles. The Zenobia was carrying more than 100 lorries and other cargo when she sank, and many of these vehicles remain associated with the wreck. Seeing trucks resting underwater beside the vessel creates an extraordinary scene and provides a striking reminder of what the ferry was transporting during its final voyage.

The external structure itself offers plenty to examine without entering enclosed areas. Divers can observe sections of the hull, railings, decks, loading areas and other recognisable parts of the ship. Because the vessel rests on its side, orientation can initially feel unusual, particularly for divers who have limited experience around large wrecks.
Marine life has also become an important part of the Zenobia experience. Over the decades, the wreck has developed into an artificial habitat that attracts numerous Mediterranean species. Schools of fish may gather around the structure, while groupers, barracuda and other marine creatures can sometimes be observed in the surrounding water.

Smaller species can be found by paying closer attention to the wreck’s surfaces, openings and sheltered areas. This means a Zenobia dive does not have to focus entirely on the scale of the vessel. Slowing down and observing individual sections can reveal another side to the site, particularly for divers interested in marine life or underwater photography.

Photography is understandably popular when diving Zenobia. The combination of a huge shipwreck, vehicles, clear water and marine life creates opportunities for dramatic underwater images. Wide-angle photography can be particularly effective for capturing the scale of the wreck, although good buoyancy and situational awareness remain essential when concentrating on a camera.

More experienced divers may be interested in exploring some of the wreck’s more challenging areas. Wreck penetration, however, introduces additional hazards and should only be undertaken by divers with suitable training, equipment and experience. Enclosed spaces can create difficulties involving orientation, visibility and direct access to the surface, making proper preparation essential.

Even when remaining outside the wreck, good buoyancy control is extremely valuable. The Zenobia’s size and orientation mean divers may spend considerable time moving alongside vertical or angled sections of the vessel. Being able to maintain a stable position helps conserve energy, improves control and allows divers to observe the wreck without unnecessary contact with its structure.

Preparation for diving Zenobia should also take the water temperature into account. Cyprus is known for its warm Mediterranean climate, but conditions below the surface vary according to season and depth. Appropriate exposure protection helps divers remain comfortable, particularly on longer dives or when completing more than one dive during the day.

A thorough briefing before entering the water is an important part of the experience. The planned route, maximum depth, expected dive time, entry and exit procedures, communication signals and emergency arrangements should all be clearly understood. Divers should also be familiar with their equipment and remain within the limits of their qualifications and recent experience.

Respect for the wreck is equally important. The Zenobia is an important part of Cyprus’s underwater heritage as well as a habitat for marine species. Divers should avoid removing objects, unnecessarily touching the structure or disturbing marine life. Responsible wreck diving helps preserve the site while reducing risks associated with ageing underwater structures.

Diving Zenobia offers far more than the opportunity to tick a famous shipwreck off a diving wish list. Its enormous dimensions, unusual orientation, submerged vehicles, marine life and range of possible dive routes make it a site capable of providing memorable experiences over several visits. For suitably qualified divers who plan carefully, follow safe diving practices and respect their personal limits, exploring this world-famous Cyprus wreck can become one of the highlights of diving in the Mediterranean.
