Introduction

Saratha Ambal, also known as Sharadamba or Sharada Devi, is the revered form of Goddess Saraswati worshipped as the divine mother of wisdom, learning and the arts. Enshrined on the banks of the Tunga River at Sringeri in Karnataka, she is cherished across South India as the guiding presence behind knowledge and spiritual insight. Students, scholars, artists and seekers turn to her for clarity of mind and the grace to learn.

For devotees and art lovers alike, her serene form is a treasured subject of sacred sculpture, beautifully crafted in idol brass for temples, shrines and devotional spaces. Explore handcrafted brass idols of the Divine Mother at Idol Brass.

1. Who Is Saratha Ambal and What Does the Form Represent?

Saratha Ambal is the Sharada form of Saraswati, the goddess of speech, learning and wisdom. The name Sharada is linked to the autumn season, known as Sharad, when Navaratri is celebrated and the goddess of knowledge is honoured with special devotion. At Sringeri she is worshipped as Sharadamba, the presiding deity of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, one of the four great monasteries ...
... associated with Adi Shankaracharya. Devotees see her as the source of true knowledge that removes ignorance and leads to liberation.

2. The Iconography of Saratha Ambal

Saratha Ambal is commonly shown seated in a graceful lotus posture with a calm and compassionate face. Her hands traditionally carry a japa mala, a sacred book and a pot of nectar, while one hand is held in the gesture of knowledge. A parrot is often shown with her, representing the sweetness of speech. The book stands for scripture and learning, the mala for meditation and devotion, and the nectar for the immortal joy of wisdom. Her form radiates peace, reminding devotees that true learning is calm, humble and illuminating.

3. Mythology and Origins: Adi Shankara and Ubhaya Bharati

The story of Saratha Ambal is closely tied to Adi Shankaracharya. According to tradition, Shankara once debated the scholar Mandana Mishra, and Mandana’s learned wife Ubhaya Bharati, regarded as an incarnation of Saraswati, was chosen to judge. After Mandana accepted defeat, Ubhaya Bharati challenged Shankara to prove himself in matters of worldly life as well. He sought time, and tradition says he entered the body of a king to gain that experience. Mandana later became his disciple, known as Sureshwaracharya, and Ubhaya Bharati agreed to follow Shankara southward. Legend says she walked behind him with the sound of her anklets, on the condition that he must not look back. At the banks of the Tunga River the sound stopped, and Shankara turned around. She remained there, and he installed her as Sharada in Sringeri.

4. Sringeri Sharadamba Temple and Navaratri Celebrations

The Sringeri Sharadamba Temple is one of the most sacred shrines of South India. Tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya first established the goddess in sandalwood, and that the image was later replaced with a golden idol. The temple also preserves a Sri Chakra in her worship. Navaratri is the grandest festival here, when the goddess is adorned in a different alankaram each day, and devotees gather in large numbers for special pujas and recitations. The festival concludes with Vijayadashami, a day considered especially auspicious for beginning education.

5. Mantra and Spiritual Significance of Saratha Ambal

Devotees chant the mantra “Om Sharadayai Namah” and recite hymns to Sharada, seeking wisdom, eloquence and a steady mind. Parents often bring young children to begin their first lessons under her blessings, a tradition known as Vidyarambham. Her worship also holds special meaning for musicians, teachers and writers. Above all, Saratha Ambal teaches that knowledge is the highest wealth, one that grows when shared and brings humility along with understanding.

Conclusion

Saratha Ambal is the compassionate mother of learning, whose story links the wisdom of Adi Shankaracharya with the sacred land of Sringeri. Through her grace, devotees seek the light of knowledge that guides every step of life.
