Introduction

Varaha is the third avatar in the Dashavatara, the ten celebrated incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Appearing as a mighty boar, he rescued Bhudevi, the Earth goddess, from the depths of the cosmic ocean and restored her to her rightful place. The avatar stands as a powerful symbol of divine protection, showing that the Lord descends whenever the world is in danger.

For devotees and collectors, the Varaha avatar is available in idol bronze and brass, crafted with devotion in traditional forms. This article explores his story, forms, temples and worship, in keeping with the heritage celebrated at Gold Plating Art Studio.

1. Who Is Varaha and How Is He Depicted?

Varaha is shown in two main ways. In the Nri Varaha form, he has a boar’s head on a human body, usually with four arms holding the conch and the discus. In the Bhu Varaha form, he carries the Earth goddess gently on his tusk or seated on his lap. His powerful stance and his tender care for Bhudevi together express strength guided by compassion.

2. Mythology and Origins: The Curse of Jaya and Vijaya

The gatekeepers of Vaikuntha, ...
... Jaya and Vijaya, were cursed by the sages Sanakadi to take birth on Earth. They were born as the demon brothers Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Growing arrogant with the boons they received, Hiranyaksha began to torment the worlds. His birth and rise set the stage for the appearance of Varaha.

3. The Rescue of Bhudevi

Hiranyaksha seized the Earth and hid her beneath the cosmic waters. The gods prayed to Lord Vishnu, and a tiny boar emerged from the nostril of Lord Brahma. It grew to an enormous size, dived into the ocean and located the Earth. Lifting Bhudevi on his tusks, Varaha rose from the waters, and the Earth was set back in her orbit.

4. The Battle with Hiranyaksha

Before he could complete the rescue, Hiranyaksha challenged Varaha to battle. Tradition says the fight lasted a thousand years, with both sides showing immense strength. In the end, Varaha defeated the demon, and the worlds were freed from his terror. The story is remembered as a victory of righteousness over pride and cruelty.

5. Varaha Temples and Sacred Traditions

Varaha is honoured in many ancient shrines. Srimushnam in Tamil Nadu is home to the Bhuvaraha Swamy Temple, and Tirumala’s Varaha Swamy shrine holds a special place in the temple tradition. Sculptural masterpieces of Varaha appear at Khajuraho, Udayagiri and Mahabalipuram, while Jajpur in Odisha is another well-known centre of his worship. The Varaha Purana narrates his glory, and devotees observe Varaha Jayanti to honour his appearance.

Conclusion

Varaha stands for the assurance that the Lord protects the world in its darkest hour. His story of courage, compassion and victory continues to inspire devotees, making the Varaha avatar one of the most respected forms in Vaishnava tradition.
