Pmi-sp Certification 2026: Requirements, Cost, Exam, Training & Career Guide
PMI-SP Certification, officially called the PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)®, is a specialist credential from the Project Management Institute (PMI) for professionals who develop, analyze, maintain, and control project schedules. The certification is designed for experienced schedulers, planners, project controls professionals, and project managers. The current exam has 170 multiple-choice questions, lasts 210 minutes, and covers five scheduling domains. Eligibility depends on education, scheduling experience, and formal scheduling education.
What Is PMI-SP Certification?
The PMI-SP full form is PMI Scheduling Professional. It is a specialized PMI credential focused specifically on professional project scheduling rather than broad project management.
If your work involves building schedules, identifying dependencies, analyzing schedule performance, forecasting completion dates, managing schedule changes, or communicating timeline impacts to stakeholders, the PMI SP certification is directly aligned with those responsibilities.
The credential is particularly relevant for professionals working on ...
... complex projects where a missed milestone can affect costs, resources, contracts, operations, or downstream work.
Unlike certifications that primarily test general project-management knowledge, the PMI scheduling professional certification goes deeper into the scheduling discipline.
PMI describes the credential as demonstrating the ability to develop and maintain project schedules, manage complex timelines, and influence project outcomes through scheduling expertise.
PMI-SP Certification Requirements in 2026
One of the most important steps before starting a PMI SP course is confirming that you satisfy PMI's experience and education requirements.
PMI currently provides three eligibility routes:
Eligibility Path
Education
Scheduling Experience
Scheduling Education
Set A
Secondary degree or equivalent
40 months within the previous 5 years
40 hours
Set B
Four-year degree or equivalent
24 months within the previous 5 years
30 hours
Set C
Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited program
12 months within the previous 5 years
30 hours
These are the current PMI SP certification requirements published by PMI.
What Counts Toward PMI-SP Eligibility?
Your professional experience should involve the specialized area of project scheduling rather than simply participating in projects.
Relevant work may include:
Developing project schedules
Defining activities and milestones
Establishing dependencies
Estimating activity durations
Creating schedule baselines
Monitoring schedule performance
Performing schedule analysis
Managing schedule changes
Forecasting completion dates
Reporting schedule status to stakeholders
PMI also states that qualifying scheduling education can include training involving Microsoft Project and other scheduling tools.
That makes practical scheduling-tool education particularly useful because it can strengthen both exam preparation and day-to-day scheduling capability.
PMI-SP Prerequisites: Do You Need PMP First?
No. PMP certification is not listed as a prerequisite for PMI-SP.
This is an important distinction because some professionals assume PMI-SP is an advanced qualification that can only be attempted after earning PMP.
Instead, your PMI SP eligibility is determined by your educational background, relevant scheduling experience, and scheduling education.
A project planner with substantial scheduling experience, for example, may qualify for PMI-SP even without holding the PMP credential.
PMI-SP Exam Format
The current PMI SP certification exam contains 170 multiple-choice questions and provides candidates with 210 minutes to complete the examination.
Of those 170 questions:
150 questions are scored
20 questions are unscored pretest questions
Exam duration: 210 minutes
Question format: Multiple choice
Exam language: English
Candidates do not know which questions are pretest items, so every question should be treated as potentially scored.
That gives approximately 74 seconds per question if you distribute your time evenly.
Good preparation therefore requires more than understanding scheduling terminology. You need to recognize scheduling
