The DCDC Certification—BICSI Data Center Design Consultant™—validates professional knowledge in data center design, construction, and operations. BICSI offers three eligibility routes: an RCDD credential, qualifying experience combined with another BICSI credential or relevant degree, or three years of verifiable data center experience within the past seven years. The current DCDC v4 exam has 100 scored questions, a two-hour time limit, and an application fee of $510 for BICSI members or $725 for nonmembers.
What Is DCDC Certification?
The BICSI Data Center Design Consultant (DCDC) is a professional certification focused specifically on the design, implementation, and operation of data center environments.
Unlike a general IT certification, DCDC deals with the physical and infrastructure considerations behind a data center. That includes areas such as:
Electrical infrastructure

Mechanical and cooling systems

Telecommunications infrastructure

Network infrastructure

Site selection and space planning

Security and fire protection

...
... Building and architectural requirements

Commissioning and maintenance

Energy efficiency

Data center documentation and project planning

BICSI describes the DCDC as an advanced credential for professionals who need to understand how the different disciplines involved in a data center fit together.
That multidisciplinary scope is important. A data center designer cannot evaluate rack layouts, cabling, power, cooling, physical security, and operational requirements as completely separate problems. Changes in one system can affect several others.
What Does a BICSI DCDC Certification Holder Do?
A DCDC-certified professional may work across the planning and design lifecycle of a data center project.
Typical responsibilities can include:
Analyzing project requirements

Supporting site and space planning

Coordinating infrastructure requirements

Reviewing telecommunications and network infrastructure

Considering electrical and mechanical systems

Supporting security and fire-safety planning

Developing or reviewing project documentation

Supporting commissioning and implementation

Considering energy efficiency and operational requirements

Coordinating requirements among owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and service providers

BICSI specifically notes that data center consultants need to understand the integration of documentation, plans, specifications, construction, and ongoing operational management.
BICSI DCDC Certification Requirements
The BICSI DCDC certification requirements currently provide three eligibility pathways.
Eligibility route
Requirement
Option 1
Current RCDD certification
Option 2
2 years of verifiable full-time equivalent data center design, construction and/or operations experience + current BICSI TECH, RTPM, or OSP certification, or an acceptable degree in architecture, engineering, or construction management
Option 3
3 years of verifiable full-time equivalent data center design, construction and/or operations experience within the past 7 years

This means an RCDD is not the only route into the DCDC examination. Professionals without RCDD certification may qualify through the experience-based pathways if they satisfy BICSI's documented requirements.
What Experience Counts?
The key phrase in the requirements is verifiable full-time equivalent work experience.
Applicants should therefore be prepared to document their professional background rather than relying only on a résumé statement.
BICSI requires applicants to submit a descriptive work history, a current résumé covering the last ten years of work history, and applicable documentation for degrees, diplomas, or certifications. BICSI also states that education, credentials, and ICT experience are subject to verification.
DCDC Certification Cost
The DCDC certification cost depends on whether you are a BICSI member.
According to BICSI's current DCDC information:
BICSI member: $510 application/exam fee

Nonmember: $725 application/exam fee

The fee includes the first exam attempt through Pearson VUE.

BICSI's online store also lists the nonmember DCDC exam fee at $725.
The examination fee is only one part of the potential certification budget. Candidates may also purchase study materials, training, standards, or preparation courses.
For example, BICSI currently lists the DCDC 24 Credential Set Digital at $540, containing ANSI/BICSI 002-2024 and Essentials of Data Center Projects, 2nd edition.
Because course and publication prices can change, candidates should verify current prices directly before budgeting.
DCDC Exam Format
The current DCDC v4 examination contains:
100 scored questions

2 hours of examination time

Multiple-choice questions

Multiple-response questions

Drag-and-drop items

Hot-spot identification

Enhanced matching items

The format matters when preparing because DCDC preparation is not simply about memorizing terminology. Some question types require candidates to interpret information and identify the appropriate solution.
A useful preparation strategy is therefore to combine standards knowledge, project concepts, and scenario-based practice.
What Is Covered in the DCDC Exam?
The DCDC credential sits across multiple data center disciplines.
The current ANSI/BICSI 002-2024 standard covers major areas including:
Data center design methodology

Site selection

Space planning

Building and structural requirements

Electrical systems

Mechanical systems

Cooling and airflow

Security

Fire protection

DCIM and intelligent systems

Telecommunications infrastructure

Network infrastructure

Commissioning

Maintenance

Energy efficiency

Multi-site data center architecture

BICSI's 2024 standard contains 17 chapters and 12 appendices across 575 pages, demonstrating the breadth of the subject.
BICSI DCDC Certification vs. RCDD
DCDC and RCDD are both BICSI credentials, but they address different professional scopes.
Credential
Primary emphasis
Typical knowledge area
RCDD
ICT infrastructure design
Telecommunications and ICT distribution design
DCDC
Data center design
Integrated data center infrastructure and project requirements

The distinction is useful for professionals deciding which knowledge area to develop.
The RCDD focuses heavily on ICT infrastructure design, while DCDC extends into the broader environment required to design and implement a data center.
For professionals already holding RCDD, DCDC can provide a more specialized data-center focus. BICSI explicitly lists current RCDD certification as one pathway for DCDC eligibility.
What Is a DCDC Course?
A DCDC course can mean different types of preparation, so candidates should check exactly what a provider is offering.
BICSI itself provides several resources for DCDC candidates, including:
DC101: Introduction to Data Center Design

DC102: Applied Data Center Design and Best Practices

Study Aid for Data Center Exam

Data Center Flashcards

Essentials of Data Center Projects

ANSI/BICSI 002-2024

BICSI recommends studying the exam content outline and suggested materials rather than treating a single course as the entire examination preparation. It currently recommends 125+ hours of study from the listed materials.
Introduction to Data Center Design
BICSI's DC101 course is designed as an introduction to data center design. The course addresses concepts such as sustainability and electrical and mechanical systems and is available as a self-paced online course.
Applied Data Center Design and Best Practices
BICSI's applied course is intended for people involved in planning, implementing, operating, or making critical data center decisions. BICSI specifically identifies architects, designers, engineers, facility managers, and data center professionals among the intended audience.
DCDC Study Aid
BICSI's DCDC Study Aid is an online preparation resource containing tutorials, 1,000+ flashcards, interactive activities, and practice questions. BICSI states that it is designed for candidates preparing for the DCDC exam and is not intended for novice learners.
How to Prepare for the DCDC Exam
A practical preparation sequence looks like this:
Confirm eligibility first.
Determine which of BICSI's three eligibility pathways applies to you.

Review the DCDC exam blueprint.
Identify your strongest and weakest subject areas.

Study ANSI/BICSI 002-2024.
Focus on understanding how the standard approaches complete data center environments rather than memorizing isolated definitions.

Study data center project fundamentals.
Use Essentials of Data Center Projects to connect design decisions with planning, implementation, commissioning, and closeout.

Build cross-discipline understanding.
Connect power, cooling, cabling, network infrastructure, security, fire protection, and space planning.

Use practice questions strategically.
Track why an answer is correct or incorrect instead of simply recording the answer.

Practice under time constraints.
The exam provides two hours for 100 scored items, so approximately 72 seconds per scored item is the overall average pace.

Revisit weak domains.
Use your practice results to determine where additional study is required.

The strongest preparation is generally not the largest collection of study materials. It is the ability to connect concepts across the different systems that make up a functioning data center.
Why ANSI/BICSI 002-2024 Matters
One of the most important preparation decisions is using the correct edition of the reference material.
BICSI states that applications received from January 1, 2025 onward are associated with the examination using ANSI/BICSI 002-2024 and Essentials of Data Center Projects, 2nd edition.
The 2024 standard also expands coverage relevant to modern facilities, including edge environments, modular and containerized data centers, and immersion/liquid cooling.
That makes edition control particularly important when purchasing older books, courses, or practice material.
Who Should Consider DCDC Certification?
DCDC is particularly relevant to professionals whose responsibilities intersect with data center planning, design, construction, infrastructure, or operations.
Potential candidates include:
Data center designers

ICT professionals

Engineers

Architects

Facility managers

Data center consultants

Infrastructure professionals

Telecommunications professionals

Professionals involved in data center construction and implementation

BICSI's own training materials identify architects, designers, engineers, facility managers, and data center professionals as relevant audiences.
The credential is also relevant to professionals who need to communicate across disciplines. A project may involve electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, ICT designers, architects, contractors, owners, and operations teams. Understanding the dependencies between those groups can be as important as understanding any individual system.
DCDC Certification: What to Check Before Applying
Before paying the application fee, verify these points:
Your eligibility pathway

Your documented data center experience

Your current BICSI credentials, if using Option 2

Your degree documentation, if applicable

The current DCDC exam version

The current exam fee

The current BICSI reference materials

Your preparation timeline

Whether your study resources match ANSI/BICSI 002-2024

BICSI says application processing is handled in the order applications are received and asks applicants to allow 30 days for approval.
Your Next Step
If you are considering DCDC Certification, start with eligibility rather than buying a course. Confirm which BICSI pathway you qualify for, then build your preparation around the DCDC v4 exam blueprint, ANSI/BICSI 002-2024, and current DCDC project materials. That approach gives you a clear route from eligibility verification to exam preparation without spending money on resources you may not need.
