Sand blasting, or abrasion blasting, propels sand granules at high speed to a surface, acting as a smoothing abrasive. The sand granules are propelled with a liquid or gas, such as pressurised air, through a nozzle. This process can be used for steel cleaning or more commonly for brick cleaning; with the aim of evening out a surface, smoothing it ready for paint or similar substances to be applied.

Depending on the end result needed, there are various ways in which blast cleaning can take place. The most commonly used process is mobile blast cleaning, which allows the user to blast a large surface area in situ, with a mobile unit. They must be careful to take all available precautions, such as wearing the proper protective gear, such as goggles, gloves and breathing protection apparatus. When wet blasting, there is less risk of inhalation problems, but there is an increased risk of excessive waste water being present. It is also advisable to use silica sand rather than sharp sand, to negate any potential risks caused by the latter.

Aside from mobile blast cleaning, there is another method, known as containment ...
... blasting. This requires the area that needs to be smoothed to be enclosed in an area where it can be blasted with the sand, which is then recycled. This removes the risk of injury or exposure to dangerous substances on the part of the machine operator, as well as any environmental factors that affect outdoor sand blasting.

There is one more method available, known as vacuum blasting. This process is similar to containment blasting, but it uses a vacuum to recover the abrasive materials, as well as keeping the whole area clean.

Like all work with hazardous materials, it is always important to follow safety precautions closely. They should not be ignored simply to finish the job more quickly, as an accident or injury could occur, setting the work back a great amount in any case, in addition to the injury caused.
There are many ways of getting sand blasting work done, and you will find that there are many high quality companies that provide blast cleaning in London and the surrounding areas. Mobile sandblasting London wide and beyond is easy to come by, and can often be found in your local phone book and on the internet.

When all safety precautions are followed closely, sand blasting can be a great way to cleanly smooth a surface ready for paint application.
