Along with love and money and all that other stuff, electricity is probably the other thing that makes the world go round. We all subconsciously want it, we know we all need it. Surely then we must be paying a massive price just to be able to use all that electricity we need to turn on our TV's, cook our microwave dinners and charge up our rubbish yet environmentally-friendly electric city cars. In fact we are surprisingly not doing that at all. If anything we're all getting quite cheap electricity and gas in relation to how much we truly need it.

Why Are Electricity Prices Relatively Reasonable?

If we demanded anything else as much as we do electricity then we would surely be held to ransom over our energy demands. Imagine if we all demanded cucumbers as much as we do electricity. Stock in the cucumber industry would go sky high and people would have to pay a huge price just to enjoy their favourite salad-based treat. As well as that, cucumber growers would notice the popularity of their product soaring and would raise their prices just because they could. ... energy providers are simply just nice guys or something else is going on. Here's a clue, there's no way the first option is true so the reason for our reasonable prices can only come down to the competition between the utilities companies.

Who Are The Utilities Competing For Our Business?

The main players in terms of electricity and gas suppliers are:
nPower.
British Gas.
EDF.
Too many more to mention.

If we take the top company mentioned just as an example we can see how they are competing in the market and ultimately keeping energy prices down. nPower offers are obviously as good in many ways as what their competitors are offering in terms of the home energy that they provide. Both sides of their business, nPower gas and nPower electricity provide competitive prices and are always looking to undercut their rivals and get new customers on board. Its quite a unique situation really, that's mainly due to the fact that the only way it's possible to differentiate between the rival utility companies is by the prices that they offer for their energy. Neither side offer a different level of quality energy so they're all playing on the same field.

This sort of fact makes levels of customer service and other interactions with the customer even more important as they can often prove to be the deciding factor between two rival utility providers. For example, if you were on the receiving end of some particularly unsavoury words from a disgruntled British Gas customer service advisor, you would be far more likely to choose nPower home energy as your first choice energy service provider. Unless of course, you like being spoken to like that in which case you would probably appreciate the poor service but that's another story.
