End-of-service gratuity can represent an important part of an employee's final settlement in the UAE. Employers, however, cannot simply deduct any outstanding amount they choose from it.

Federal labour rules allow deductions in specific circumstances. These can include repayment of certain loans or overpayments, pension or insurance contribution shortfalls, approved disciplinary penalties, debts arising from court judgments and certain losses caused by an employee's mistake or breach of instructions.

A deduction should have a recognised legal basis and appropriate supporting documents. Recruitment expenses, visa costs, medical expenses, uniforms or unexplained charges do not automatically become deductible simply because the employment relationship has ended.
Employees who dispute a deduction can ask the employer for a written breakdown explaining why the money has been withheld and what documents support it.

Private-sector employees covered by the federal Labour Law may also raise eligible disputes through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.

Timing matters. Employment-related claims under the federal framework generally cannot be considered after two years from the end of the employment relationship.

Employees working under separate regimes, including the DIFC or ADGM, should check the rules that apply to their particular employment jurisdiction before taking action.
