A filled crossword grid looks like a finished activity. For a family Bible lesson, though, the interesting part can come after the last square. A child may spell a name correctly and still have no idea why that person matters in the story. Leave a little room for that conversation.

Start small. Choose a short passage and read it together before opening a puzzle. If the crossword covers several books, pick a few clues to discuss rather than trying to turn every answer into a separate lesson. Ten quiet minutes with two or three words is a perfectly reasonable place to stop.

Keep the Bible open. Looking up an answer isn't cheating when the point is learning how to find a passage. Ask the child to show where the answer came from, then read the sentence before it and the sentence after it. That extra bit of reading can explain a word that seemed confusing on its own.

Spelling needs a little patience too. Names may look different across Bible translations, and a familiar modern word may not match the wording a puzzle expects. Check the translation before treating an answer as wrong. Sometimes its a spelling problem, ...
