If you're sourcing steel wire rope for cranes, hoists, lifts, slings, or general material handling in India, understanding the relevant Indian Standards (IS) isn't optional — it's what separates a rope that performs safely under load from one that doesn't. Here's a practical breakdown of what these standards actually cover and why they matter to buyers.
The core standard: IS 2266
IS 2266 — Steel Wire Ropes for General Engineering Purposes — is the primary Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specification governing wire ropes used in cranes, excavators, lifts, hoists, and similar equipment. The standard has gone through several revisions over the years, with the current edition being IS 2266:2024, following earlier versions including IS 2266:2019 and IS 2266:2002.
IS 2266 classifies wire rope by several key parameters:
• Construction — the arrangement of wires and strands, such as 6×7, 6×19, 6×36, or 8×19. The numbers describe strands × wires per strand: a 6×19 rope, for instance, has 6 strands with 19 wires each. Fewer, thicker wires (like 6×7) give more abrasion resistance and are common ...

• Type — round, oval, or flattened strand construction.
• Finish — galvanized or ungalvanized (bright), depending on the corrosion resistance needed for the application environment.
Why the breaking load matters
A central requirement under IS 2266 is the minimum breaking force for each combination of construction, diameter, and rope grade. This is verified through a destructive test where a sample rope, terminated at both ends, is pulled until it fails, and the measured breaking load must meet or exceed the standard's tabulated minimum. This is what underpins the safety factor a lifting equipment manufacturer builds into their products — the rated working load is always set well below the rope's actual breaking strength, typically with a safety factor of 4 to 6 times depending on the application.

IS 2266 doesn't operate alone. It references and works alongside several other standards depending on the wire rope's components:
• IS 6594 — covers general requirements for steel wire ropes, including material, dimensions, and testing methods referenced throughout IS 2266.
• IS 1804 — governs the fibre core material used inside ropes with a fibre core.
• IS 1835 — specifies galvanizing requirements (Types A, AB, or B) for ropes that need corrosion protection.
• IS 2363 and IS 1828 — referenced for wire and testing specifications relevant to rope manufacturing and verification.
What BIS certification means for buyers
Steel wire rope for general engineering purposes falls under a mandatory BIS Product Certification Scheme, commonly known as the ISI Mark Scheme. A manufacturer holding a valid BIS license for IS 2266 has demonstrated that their construction, dimensions, mechanical properties, and performance meet the standard's requirements — and that they're subject to ongoing testing and compliance checks, not just a one-time certification. For a buyer, checking for the ISI mark and asking for the BIS license scope (which construction types, grades, and cores it actually covers) is one of the simplest ways to verify you're getting a rope that meets the standard, rather than one that merely claims to.
