Try Before You Buy: Why Coffee Sample Bags Are A Game-changer
Specialty coffee isn't one-size-fits-all. What tastes incredible to one person might feel underwhelming to another — flavor is personal, shaped by everything from your brewing method to your general taste preferences. That's exactly why sample bags exist, and why they're one of the smartest ways to explore a roaster's lineup before committing to a full-size bag or subscription.
The Problem With Buying Blind
Ordering a full 16 oz or bulk bag of coffee you've never tried is a bit of a gamble. Maybe the tasting notes sound great on paper — "notes of blackberry and dark chocolate" — but the actual cup doesn't match your palate once it's brewed. Now you're stuck finishing (or wasting) a bag you don't love, and it can take weeks to work through a full bag, especially if you're not drinking multiple cups a day.
This is especially true with specialty coffee, where flavor profiles vary so much more dramatically than mass-market grocery store blends. A single origin coffee that's bright, fruity, and almost tea-like is a completely different experience from a dark, heavy-bodied blend — and neither is "better," ...
... just different.
How Sample Bags Solve This
A 2 oz sample bag is enough coffee to brew several cups — plenty to genuinely evaluate a roast's flavor, body, and acidity without committing to a full-size bag. It's a low-risk, low-cost way to explore, and it turns coffee shopping into something closer to a wine or cheese tasting: small portions, side-by-side comparisons, and an actual chance to learn your own preferences.
Here's what sample bags are great for:
Discovering new origins. Curious about an Ethiopian single origin versus a Colombian one? Try both without buying two full bags and risking one going to waste.
Comparing roast levels. Light, medium, and dark roasts taste dramatically different in terms of acidity, body, and sweetness — samples let you figure out your preference without guesswork.
Testing before a subscription. Before locking into a recurring subscription, taste-test a few options so you know exactly what you're signing up for month after month.
Gifting. A few different samples make a thoughtful, low-cost gift for the coffee lover in your life who has "everything" — it's a way to give an experience rather than just another product.
Exploring seasonal or limited releases. Roasters often bring in small, seasonal lots that aren't available for long. Sample bags are a low-commitment way to try these before they're gone.
What We Offer
Our 2 oz coffee sample bags span our full catalog — single origin, organic, blended, and decaf — so you can build your own personal tasting flight and figure out exactly which roast deserves a permanent spot in your kitchen.
How to Taste Like a Pro
When trying multiple samples, brew them the same way (same grind, same ratio, same water temperature) so you're comparing beans, not brewing inconsistencies. If you brew one sample with a coarse grind in a French press and another with a fine grind in an espresso machine, you're no longer making a fair comparison.
Take a few seconds to notice the aroma before your first sip — much of what we perceive as "taste" actually comes from smell. Pay attention to the aftertaste too, since that's often where a coffee's true character shows up, well after the first sip has faded. Some coffees taste unremarkable on the first sip but reveal a lingering sweetness or fruitiness a few seconds later.
It also helps to taste samples at room temperature at some point during your cup, not just piping hot. As coffee cools slightly, different flavor notes tend to become more noticeable — professional cuppers often taste coffee across a range of temperatures for exactly this reason.
Building Your Own Tasting Flight
A simple way to get started: order three to four samples spanning different categories — for example, one light-roast single origin, one darker blend, one organic pick, and one decaf. Brew each one on the same day if possible, using identical equipment and ratios, and take quick notes on what you notice. Over just a few tastings, you'll likely start to notice patterns in what you gravitate toward — maybe you consistently prefer brighter, fruitier coffees, or maybe you're drawn to heavier, chocolatey blends.
From Sample to Staple
Once you've found your favorite, you can move on to a full 16oz bag or set up a subscription so you never run out. Many of our regular subscription customers actually started with a handful of sample bags — it's a natural, low-pressure way to find your everyday coffee rather than committing blind and hoping for the best.
