Latpanchar: A Small Himalayan Destination With Excellent Birding

Latpanchar may not be as famous as many Himalayan tourist destinations, but among birdwatchers and bird photographers it has developed a very different reputation. Located in the hills of North Bengal, its forests offer rewarding birding in a relatively compact area.

One of the biggest attractions here is the Rufous-necked Hornbill. Watching and photographing this impressive Himalayan hornbill is a major reason many birders visit Latpanchar. However, the destination offers much more than a single sought-after species.

The surrounding forest supports a variety of Himalayan birds, and a typical morning can involve walking forest roads and trails, listening for calls and watching feeding activity in the canopy. Birding can sometimes be slow, but a quiet patch of forest can suddenly become active when a mixed flock moves through.

For photographers, patience is particularly important. A bird may be visible but not necessarily in good light or against a clean background. Waiting for it to move naturally into a better position often produces a better photograph than continuously trying to follow it.

A well-planned Latpanchar birding tour should therefore provide enough time in the field rather than treating Latpanchar as a quick stop between other destinations.
