Electricity costs can be difficult to control for NSW businesses, especially when part of the bill depends on when power is used. Warehouses, offices, retail sites and workshops can experience short periods of high demand when machinery, air conditioning or other equipment runs at the same time.
Commercial BESS solutions give businesses a practical way to manage these peaks. Instead of drawing all required power from the grid during high-demand periods, a battery energy storage system can supply part of the load. This can reduce peak demand, improve solar self-consumption and give businesses more control over energy costs.
What Is Commercial Battery Energy Storage?
Commercial battery energy storage uses batteries, power conversion equipment and an energy management system to store electricity for later use. The system may be charged using excess rooftop solar, lower-cost grid electricity or a combination of both.
A commercial BESS should be designed around the site's load profile, operating hours, tariff structure, solar generation and future energy requirements.
For example, a business with daytime ...
... solar production may store surplus energy and use it later when demand rises. A site without solar may still use a battery to shift grid consumption where its tariff makes this worthwhile.
How Commercial BESS Solutions Reduce Peak Electricity Costs
Many commercial electricity plans include demand charges. These can be linked to the highest level of electricity demand recorded during a billing period. Australian Government energy guidance notes that business demand charges are often calculated using the highest half-hour interval of demand, while NSW Government guidance states that battery storage can help businesses reduce peak demand charges.
This is where commercial BESS solutions can be particularly useful.
When a site's electricity demand starts approaching a set limit, the battery can discharge automatically. Instead of allowing grid demand to spike, stored energy supplies part of the load. This strategy is commonly known as peak shaving. Government guidance also identifies peak shaving as a way to manage maximum demand and optimise network and retail tariff costs.
Imagine a workshop that normally operates at a moderate load but experiences a sharp increase when several large machines start together. Without a battery, that short spike may increase the site's maximum recorded demand. With a correctly sized commercial BESS, the battery can support the site during that period and reduce the amount of power drawn from the grid.
The potential saving depends on the retailer, network tariff, battery capacity, discharge power and the site's actual interval data.
Other Benefits of Commercial Battery Energy Storage
Peak shaving is only one benefit. Commercial battery energy storage can also help businesses use more of the electricity generated by their own solar system.
If rooftop solar produces more electricity than the site needs during quieter periods, the excess can be stored instead of immediately exported. The battery can then supply that stored energy later, reducing grid purchases when solar generation falls.
A battery may also support time-of-use optimisation. Where a suitable tariff applies, a business can charge during lower-cost periods and discharge when electricity is more expensive.
Some systems can provide backup power for selected loads during outages. However, backup functionality must be included in the system design, so businesses should not assume every commercial battery provides whole-site backup.
Which NSW Businesses Could Benefit?
Commercial BESS solutions are worth investigating for businesses with noticeable demand peaks, high electricity use, existing commercial solar or energy-intensive equipment.
Potential candidates include manufacturers, warehouses, cold-storage sites, supermarkets, offices, farms, workshops and businesses adding EV charging.
The best way to assess suitability is through electricity interval data. A large site may consume significant energy but have a relatively flat demand profile, while a smaller business may experience expensive short-term spikes.
NSW also operates the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, which includes eligible battery activities for businesses and aims to reduce electricity demand during peak periods. Scheme rules and incentives can change, so current eligibility should be confirmed before including any incentive in project calculations.
What to Check Before Installing a Commercial BESS
Start with at least 12 months of electricity bills and interval meter data where available. Identify when demand peaks occur, how long they last and whether they overlap with solar generation.
The assessment should also consider usable capacity, discharge power, inverter compatibility, monitoring, warranties, safety requirements and future expansion.
Avoid selecting a battery simply because it offers the largest storage capacity. The right system is the one designed around the site's real demand profile and the specific periods that create the highest electricity costs.
Take Better Control of Business Energy Costs
For NSW businesses facing high demand charges, commercial BESS solutions can provide a practical way to manage electricity more effectively.
By storing energy and releasing it when the site needs it most, a commercial BESS can reduce grid demand peaks, increase solar self-consumption and improve overall energy management.
Before investing, review your tariff, electricity bills and interval data with an experienced commercial battery provider. A properly designed system should be based on how your business actually uses electricity, not on a one-size-fits-all battery package.
