Gangotri Dham: Where The Ganga Descended To Earth
Gangotri is the source of the Ganga spiritually, if not quite geographically and one of the four sacred Char Dham shrines of Uttarakhand. Sitting at about 3,100 metres in the Uttarkashi district, the temple honours Goddess Ganga at the place where, in legend, she descended from the heavens to earth.
The significance: why Ganga came down
The story goes that King Bhagirath performed severe penance to bring the Ganga down from the heavens, so that her waters could liberate the souls of his ancestors. The river's force was so great it would have shattered the earth, so Lord Shiva agreed to catch her in his matted hair and release her gently.
The spot where she is believed to have first touched earth is Gangotri, and a rock near the temple Bhagirath Shila is said to be where the king sat in meditation. The actual glacial origin of the river, Gaumukh, lies about 18 km further up a high-altitude trail.
The temple itself is a neat white shrine built in the early 18th century by the Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa, later restored by the royal family of Jaipur. During winter, when Gangotri closes, the goddess's ...

Darshan timings
In 2026 Gangotri opened on 19 April on Akshaya Tritiya and is expected to close around 10–11 November on Bhai Dooj. Darshan usually runs from the early morning, with an afternoon break around midday, reopening in the afternoon and closing by evening. As always, exact timings shift with the season, and Char Dham registration is compulsory every vehicle is checked at Uttarkashi, and no QR code means no entry.
Best time to visit
The sweet spots are May–June and September–October, when the weather is stable and the mountain roads are at their safest. Avoid the monsoon months of July and August, when landslides are common on the Uttarkashi routes. Even in summer, nights are cold, so carry warm clothing.
How to reach
Gangotri has one big advantage over Yamunotri and Kedarnath: a motorable road runs almost right up to the temple. From Dehradun it is about 250 km, and from the parking area it is only a short walk to the shrine which makes it far more manageable for older pilgrims and families. Most travellers reach Haridwar or Rishikesh first, then drive up via Uttarkashi.
Fitting Gangotri into the full circuit
Gangotri is one stop on the classic four-temple circuit, and doing all four by road can take 10–12 days of hard travel. If your goal is to complete the entire Char Dham Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath without spending nearly two weeks on winding mountain roads, the helicopter circuit compresses it into just a few days.
Alaska Aviation Services runs a full Char Dham helicopter yatra from Dehradun that reaches all four shrines with VIP darshan, hotel transfers, and a fraction of the physical strain.
For a temple as serene as Gangotri, arriving relaxed rather than road-weary lets you actually sit with the moment.
