Over the past few years, I’ve spent a lot of time watching how everyday folks in India handle their hard-earned money. With traditional fixed deposits barely keeping up with inflation and the stock market feeling like a roller coaster ride half the time, more people are looking for steady alternatives. That’s where indian corporate bonds come into the picture. They’ve quickly become a go-to choice for building a balanced portfolio because they offer regular payout checks and noticeably better interest rates than standard government options. But higher returns always come with a catch: extra risk. Knowing how to check a company's financial health before handing over your money is the single best way to protect yourself.
When I look at any bond, my primary goal is simple. I want to know: Can this company actually pay me back my interest on time and return my principal when the bond matures? Here is the simple, straightforward checklist ...
... I use to measure a company's strength before putting any money on the line.
1. Credit Ratings (and Their Trajectory)
Credit rating agencies in India—like CRISIL, ICRA, and CARE—do the heavy lifting of studying companies and assigning them grades. These range from AAA (the absolute safest) down to D (which means the company is in default).
While a current AAA or AA rating looks great on paper, I always look at the company’s history over the last few years. If a firm’s rating has been quietly downgraded recently, it’s often a red flag that trouble is brewing under the hood.
2. Borrowing Levels and Balance
A company's balance sheet tells you whether it's running on its own strength or leaning way too heavily on borrowed cash. To keep things practical, I focus on two basic numbers:

Debt-to-Equity Ratio: This compares how much debt the company carries against the money brought in by its owners. A lower number means the company has a strong safety net if business slows down.
Interest Coverage Ratio: This shows how easily the company’s operating profits can cover its annual interest bills. If a business earns ₹4 for every ₹1 it owes in interest, it’s in a healthy position to keep paying its investors without breaking a sweat.

3. Actual Cash in the Bank
Paper profits can sometimes look better than they really are due to clever accounting, but cash in the bank never lies. I always look at whether a business generates real, steady cash flow from its day-to-day operations. A company that consistently bleeds cash will eventually struggle to pay its bondholders, no matter how good its sales pitch sounds.
4. Weighing Your Options: Are Corporate Bonds Better Than Government Bonds?
A question I get asked all the time is: are corporate bonds better than government bonds? The real answer is that neither is universally "better"—it completely depends on what you need your money to do.

Safety: Government bonds are backed by the central government, making them virtually risk-free from a default standpoint. Corporate bonds carry real credit risk because private companies can—and do—run into financial trouble.
Returns: To compensate you for taking on that extra risk, companies pay higher interest rates. If you want a boost in yield and feel comfortable doing a little homework on the company, corporate bonds can be very rewarding.
Purpose: Government bonds are built for absolute peace of mind and capital preservation. Corporate options are better suited for growing your annual income once your baseline safety is already secured.

Final Thoughts
Investing in corporate debt shouldn't be a guessing game, nor should it be about chasing the flashiest interest rate on the market. By taking a few minutes to look past the headline numbers and check a company's debt levels, cash flow, and rating history, you can make confident decisions that protect your savings while still earning a great return.
