When I first started looking into bond markets, one thing confused me more than anything else. On screen, a bond would be listed at one price, but when it came time to actually buy it, the final bill was always higher.
It took me a while to realize that I wasn't being charged hidden fees. Instead, I was seeing the difference between what investors call the clean price and the dirty price.
If you want to invest in bonds, understanding how these two prices work is one of the most practical skills you can learn. It prevents surprises when you trade and helps you see what a bond is truly worth.
The Two Prices of a Bond
When you look up a bond in the financial market, you will almost always see two distinct numbers attached to it:

Clean Price: This is the baseline price of the bond itself. It moves up or down based on market interest rates, the issuer's financial health, and overall economy. It completely ignores any interest ...
... accumulating behind the scenes.
Dirty Price: This is the total cash you actually pay to buy the bond today. It combines the clean price with any interest that has accumulated since the last payout.

To keep it simple, you can think of it with this simple equation:
Dirty Price = Clean Price + Accrued Interest
Quick Comparison

Feature

Clean Price

Dirty Price

What it includes

Only the core value of the bond

Core bond value plus accumulated interest

Where you see it

On trading screens and price charts

On your final trade invoice

How it behaves

Changes smoothly based on market conditions

Rises daily, then drops right after interest is paid

Main purpose

To easily compare different bonds

To calculate the exact money needed to complete a buy

How Accrued Interest Works in Real Life
Most bonds pay interest to investors once or twice a year. However, interest builds up every single day you hold the bond.
Imagine a scenario where an investor holds a bond for five months after the last interest payout and then decides to sell it to me. Since the bond issuer will send the entire six-month interest check to whoever owns the bond on payout day, I will get paid for time I didn't own it.
To make things fair, I pay the seller for those five months of interest upfront when I buy the bond. That extra cash added to the purchase is the accrued interest.
If trading systems showed dirty prices on public charts, bond prices would look like they were climbing every single day, only to drop sharply the moment interest got paid out. By displaying the clean price instead, charts stay smooth and easy to read.
Why This Matters for Your Portfolio
Recognizing the debate around clean price vs dirty price helps you make smarter decisions as an investor:

Better Budgeting: Knowing the dirty price helps you prepare the exact amount of cash needed to buy a bond, so you don't get caught short at settlement.
Fairer Comparisons: Comparing clean prices lets you see which bond offers better core value without getting distracted by temporary interest build-ups.

Once you know that the dirty price simply covers the seller's fair share of interest, buying fixed-income assets becomes far more straightforward and predictable.
