Born a Leader of the Hunter Clan
Thinnanar was born into a hunter clan in the hill country known as Pothappi. As the leader of this hunter clan, he would go into the forest every day to hunt. It was his custom never to keep the meat he gathered for himself alone, but to share it generously with his friends and relatives.
The Shivalinga Found Deep in the Forest
One day, while out hunting in the forest with his friends, Thinnanar finished the hunt and sat resting beneath a tree when a nearby mountain caught his attention. He thought to himself, "In all these days I've spent roaming the forests, it never occurred to me to climb this mountain. What could be up there? Let me go and see." So he climbed the mountain, and amid the dense trees, he came upon a Shiva lingam. Without even realizing it, love welled up in his heart for that lingam.
He was surprised to see freshly offered flowers and leaves upon the lingam. "Someone must be offering flowers to Shiva every day," he thought, "but they have failed to offer him food. Won't this one who dwells alone in this forest grow hungry?" Thinking this, Thinnanar ...
... came down from the mountain and took a tasty piece from the wild boar meat that his friends had hunted and cooked. He ran to the nearby Ponmugali river, filled his mouth with water, and hurried back up the mountain.
The Meat Becomes an Offering
Thinnanar spat out the water he had carried in his mouth onto the lingam, placed the boar meat he had brought upon the sacred stone, and said, "Eat…" His friends who witnessed this found it amusing. But this was not a one-time act. He did the same thing every single day. As the days passed, an unbreakable devotion to Shiva grew within Thinnanar.
Fearing that Lord Shiva, being alone at night, might be threatened by fierce wild animals, Thinnanar would keep watch there through the night, only returning home once dawn broke.
The Brahmin's Complaint
A Brahmin priest who had been performing the daily ablutions and worship of the Shiva lingam was distressed to find boar meat placed upon the sacred stone. He appealed to Shiva, saying, "My Lord… every day I perform abhishekam and worship for you. But someone who despises you keeps offering meat in this manner. You must punish him."
That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the Brahmin's dream and said, "O Brahmin, he too is my devotee, just as you are. In the only way he knows, he worships me with boundless devotion. There is nothing wrong with this. I shall make you witness his love for yourself. Come tonight to my abode and watch, hidden, what unfolds." With these words, he vanished.
Following Shiva's instruction, the Brahmin hid that night behind a tree near the lingam and began to watch.
The Moment He Gave His Eyes Without Hesitation
As always, Thinnanar arrived with meat in hand and water in his mouth. Just as he was about to spit the water onto Shiva, he saw blood flowing from one of Shiva's eyes. Thinnanar's heart was thrown into panic. "Oh no… blood is flowing from Lord Shiva's eyes! Who could have done this?" Without a moment's hesitation, he gouged out one of his own eyes with his arrow and fitted it into the place of Shiva's eye. The bleeding stopped at once.
But shortly after, blood began flowing from Shiva's other eye as well. Without any hesitation, Thinnanar prepared to gouge out his second eye too. Realizing that if he lost his sight completely, he would not be able to place his eye correctly in Shiva's other eye socket, he marked the spot with his big toe to guide himself, and made ready to tear out his remaining eye.
At that very moment, a divine voice rang out: "Thinnanar, stop!" Lord Shiva appeared before him and said, "Thinnanar… I am overwhelmed by your devotion. Even at the cost of your own sight, you were ready to give me your very eyes. From this day, you shall be known as 'Kannappan' and you shall always remain by my side." With this, he granted Thinnanar the state of union with Shiva (Sivapadam).
The Brahmin, who had witnessed all this in hiding, was likewise overwhelmed by Kannappan's devotion, and he too received the grace of Kannappa Nayanar.

How Thinnanar Came to Be Known as Kannappa Nayanar
Because he offered his very eyes to Lord Shiva, Thinnanar came to be called "Kannappan" (he who gave his eyes). This is the story of a hunter with no formal learning, no knowledge of scripture, and no understanding of ritual procedure, who won over the Lord through the pure, unlettered love in his heart. What the Lord desires is not the correct form of ritual, but the sincerity within a devotee's heart.
Even today, at the Kalahasti temple, special worship services are held in memory of Kannappa Nayanar's sacrifice, and his name remains inscribed in golden letters forever in the history of devotion.
