What Are 310 and 321 Stainless Steel Flat Bars?
A 310 SS Flat Bar carries around 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel. That is a high number for both, and it is what gives this grade its resistance to scaling even at 1150°C in continuous use. For sheer heat resistance, 310 SS Flat Bar tends to be the stronger option. For jobs involving a lot of welding, 321 usually holds up better afterwards. Composition drives performance. Alloy ratios decide how each bar handles oxidation, welding, and long-term carbide behavior.
Stainless Steel 310 Flat Bars pack 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel, the highest combined ratio among standard heat-resistant grades. Stainless Steel 321 Flat Bars carry 17-19% chromium and 9-12% nickel, supplemented by titanium at five times the carbon content or higher. That titanium addition locks carbon away from chromium during welding, preventing carbide precipitation at grain boundaries. Due to this, 310 offers raw oxidation resistance, while 321 has post-weld structural stability.
High-Temperature Performance
Sustained heat separates these grades quickly. Oxidation resistance and strength retention diverge as temperatures rise.
Grade 310 resists continuous oxidation up to 2000 °F (1093 °C) and intermittent exposure to 1900 °F (1038 °C) without significant scaling. Grade 321 has good stability up to 900°C in continuous service, dropping to about 800°C when sulfidation attack is a consideration. Thermal cycling favors 310 for sheer endurance. Its heavier oxide layer is regenerated faster after thermal shock. In furnace linings and heat treatment equipment an extended exposure at low temperature always favors 310 over 321 above 900°C.
Corrosion Resistance
General corrosion behavior differs from high-temperature oxidation resistance, and this distinction shapes grade selection.
Both grades resist atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion well, but their strengths diverge under specific conditions. Grade 310 delivers superior oxidation resistance in dry, high-temperature air. Grade 321 delivers stronger resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or exposure between 425°C and 900°C, the sensitization range where unstabilized grades suffer carbide precipitation. Titanium stabilization gives 321 a clear edge in weld-heavy fabrications exposed to chloride-bearing environments.
310 vs 321 Stainless Steel Flat Bars: Which Should You Choose?
Start with the operating temperature. Above 1000°C, 310 is the practical choice, and 321 is suitable for moderate ranges up to 900°C. Consider the length of heat exposure, as 310 can withstand longer continuous cycles without loss of oxide protection. If the application involves a lot of welding, choose 321, as the titanium stabilization avoids weld-related corrosion problems further down the line. Chloride exposure and risk of sensitization between 425°C and 900°C also indicate 321. Beyond that, check the mechanical strength needed, how complicated the fabrication is, and whether the job needs to meet ASTM A276 or ASME SA479 standards.
