Fireproofing is one of the best ways to stand against fire. The process refers to increasing resistance of a building or a structure, against fire. Many of you however, think that fireproofing means the surface upon which it is applied stays intact even during the outbreak. Truth is, fireproofing allows the surface to stay constant or resist the effects of fire for a certain period of timeframe and duration for which it stays almost unaffected. It depends on the material used for fireproofing the surface.  The performance of a fireproofing material contributes to the safety of the building, people and assets.

Fireproofing constitutes two types of materials active and passive fire elements. while passive fire elements are used especially in oil refineries or industrial facilities, to minimise the spread of fire to prevent any kind of structural damage due to overheating, active fireproofing is mainly used in commercial units. However, commercial or business units use both types of fireproofing elements in combination. The damage that fire brings upon can be significantly reduced with the help of passive ...
... fire elements. These types of systems are usually heavier and steadier than their active counterparts.

Moreover, it’s been found that since they are extremely heavy-weight concrete-based fireproofing are difficult to be installed at higher elevation. However, as a lot of buildings used for commercial purposes tend to be high-rise by nature, which at the same time raise fear of being vulnerable to fire outbreaks, experts suggest the use of lightweight alternatives during such scenarios. Fireproofing in Sydney is thus, undergoing heavy changes in order to cater to adaptable needs.

Today, vermiculite is considered to be one of the most effective and light-weight fireproofing elements in use. They can easily be installed at higher elevations. Even though vermiculite is so highly in demand, they are not as effective as fireproofed concreting systems are. Vermiculite is not applicable for use in lower elevations where footfall is higher. They are not as strong as their heavy-duty counterparts but are effective for raised up applications.

Why Fireproofing
Many of you may still think why fireproofing out of all other methods, is increasingly applicable these days? Fireproofing adds a protective layer to a surface. It is best applicable for structural steel and concrete builds. Nevertheless, here we would refer to its use in structural steel builds, mostly. Since the metal has a breaking point of 535 degrees following which it melts, hence experts in the field, have given birth to fireproofing elements for structural steel to maintain its integrity during fire outbreaks. The main aim of applying fireproofing element is to prevent steel from reaching its melting point.

However, with time fireproofing degrades and even gets damaged from daily use which quite implies to the fact that regular maintenance is necessary in order to infuse more life to the surface. As a result, the fire resistance property of the surface remains constant and can easily function in times of need.

A risk analysis is done on the surface which helps owners of a plant or building ascertain whether the structure is truly fireproof. Thus, maintaining a fireproofed surface is crucial.
