How To Control Different Rooms With A Zoned Hydronic Heating System?
A zoned Hydronic Heating system allows different areas of a home to be controlled separately. Instead of using one thermostat for the entire property, individual zones can use their own thermostats and controls. This can be useful when rooms have different heating requirements or occupancy schedules.
The U.S. Department of Energy describes hydronic zoning using separate circulating lines, zone valves controlled by individual thermostats, or central electronic controllers.
Start by Defining Your Heating Zones
The first step is deciding which rooms should operate as separate zones. For example, you could have separate zones for:
1. Living and dining areas
2. Bedrooms
3. Home offices
4. Bathrooms
5. Guest rooms
Our hydronic zoning guidance notes that areas with significantly different occupancy schedules should not necessarily be placed in the same zone.
Install a Thermostat for Each Zone
Each independently controlled zone needs a thermostat that can detect the temperature and signal a heating demand.
When the temperature in a zone falls below ...
... its setpoint, the thermostat can send a signal to the zone-control equipment. We describe systems where thermostats communicate with controllers that operate the corresponding actuators.
This means you could set one temperature for your living room and a different setting for your bedroom without controlling both rooms together.
Use a Manifold to Control Heating Loops
For systems using radiant floor circuits, the manifold provides a central point for controlling water flow through individual loops. We have explained that each loop can have an open/close valve operated by an actuator, with the actuator responding to thermostat control.
A suitable Hydronic Heating Kit may therefore include components such as manifolds, actuators, thermostats and control equipment, depending on the system design.
Connect Thermostats to Actuators
An actuator controls the corresponding heating circuit. When a thermostat calls for heat, the control system can operate the actuator and allow heated water to flow through that zone.
Control Hydronic Heating Radiators Separately
Room-by-room control can also be achieved with radiator-based hydronic systems. Depending on the system design, thermostatic or electrically operated valves can regulate individual radiators or zones.
Check Pump and Heat-Source Control
Zoning needs to be coordinated with the circulation system and heat source. A zone controller may communicate with the pump or boiler relay when a zone requires heat.
Review the System Before Making Changes
If your existing Hydronic Heating system has only one thermostat, converting it to multiple zones may require changes to valves, manifolds, controls, wiring and circulation.
A qualified heating professional should assess the existing pipework and equipment before modifications. Proper zoning depends on the system's actual design, the number of circuits and the heat source.
With correctly selected controls, a zoned system can give you independent temperature control in different rooms while directing heated water toward zones that are calling for heat.
