Introduction

Many people have this question in their mind regarding Pitru Dosh: When should Pitru Dosh Nivaran Puja be performed? Is it appropriate to perform puja in the month of Shravan or should one wait for Pitru Paksh? According to religious beliefs, Shraddha, Tarpan and other religious rituals are performed at different times for the peace and respect of the ancestors.

The month of Shravan is considered special for the worship of Lord Shiva, while Pitru Paksh is considered an important time for performing Shraddha and Tarpan, especially for the ancestors. Therefore, both have different religious significance.

What Is Pitra Dosh?

Pitra Dosh is considered a condition related to the kundli in astrology. In astrological beliefs, it is associated with Sun, Rahu, Ketu and some special planetary positions in the horoscope. In religious traditions, Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja, Tarpan, Shraddha and other Pitru Shanti rituals are performed for the peace of the ancestors.
However, it is advisable to get the horoscope analyzed by a qualified astrologer to determine whether a person has Pitra Dosh in his/her ...
... kundli or not.

Should Pitru Dosh Puja Be Performed In The Month Of Shravan Or Not?

Pitru Dosh Nivaran Puja can be performed in the month of Shravan, but it is not necessary to consider it as an alternative to Pitru Paksha.
Shravan is considered a special month for devotion and worship of Lord Shiva. Trimbakeshwar being one of the famous Jyotirlinga sites of Lord Shiva, devotees are especially interested in religious rituals here at this time.

If a person wants to perform a puja related to Pitru Dosh and wants to perform it only in the month of Shravan, then it would be appropriate to consult a Pandit for the method of puja and the auspicious time.
Why Is Pitru Paksh Important?

Pitru Paksh is a special period dedicated to the ancestors. During this period, rituals like Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Daan are performed to pray for the peace of the ancestors and to express respect towards them.
The main period of Pitru Paksh in 2026 is from September 27 to October 10. Sarva Pitru Amavasya will be on October 10, 2026, which is considered the last and important day of Pitru Paksh.

Therefore, if your main objective is to perform rituals related to the peace of ancestors, Shraddha or Tarpan, then the time of Pitru Paksh holds special importance.

Shravan Month vs Pitru Paksha – Which Is Better?

Shravan Month

Special for the worship of Lord Shiva
Time for Shiva Puja and religious rituals
Pitru Dosh Pooja can be performed during this period
Consult a Pandit for the right auspicious time

Pitru Paksha

Special for the peace of ancestors and Shraddha
Time for Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan
Special importance for rituals related to ancestors
Shraddha is performed according to the respective Pitru Tithi

So “which time is better?” depends on the individual's specific ritual needs. If the purpose is Pitru Shanti and Shraddha, then Pitru Paksha is especially important. At the same time, if for some reason one does not want to wait till Pitru Paksha, then one can consult a Pandit about Pitru Dosh Nivaran Puja in the month of Shravan also at the appropriate auspicious time.
