The 2027 Toyota bZ Woodland vs. 2027 Subaru Trailseeker argument begins with an awkward fact for Toyota: these electric SUVs share nearly all the important hardware. They use dual electric motors, standard all-wheel drive, a 74.7-kWh battery, 375 horsepower, and a maximum estimated range of 281 miles.


Then the window sticker enters the room and starts making accusations.


The 2027 Subaru Trailseeker Premium starts at $39,995. Toyota prices the 2027 bZ Woodland at $45,380, while the Premium grade costs $47,480. Subaru therefore gives buyers a $5,385 lower entry point and a $925 advantage against Toyota's top trim.


The question does not involve which SUV can move. Both can move very quickly. The real issue involves how much equipment, software, trail hardware, and brand preference a buyer receives for the extra money.


Shared hardware, different personalities

The major mechanical specifications read like someone photocopied one vehicle's data sheet and changed the logo:

The motors deliver maximum thrust from zero rpm, so neither vehicle needs a conventional multi-speed transmission. That response explains the brisk launches and the faint sense that the occupants have accidentally boarded a very quiet amusement-park ride.


Each motor can adjust torque independently. Software can reduce power at a spinning wheel, apply braking, and redirect available force to the tires with grip. This strategy works well on snow, mud, wet grass, and loose gravel. It does not turn either SUV into a rock crawler, because software cannot create longer suspension travel or thicker underbody armor.


Range and charging


The electric SUV range contest ends in a draw on paper. Toyota and Subaru each claim a maximum estimated range of 281 miles, although Toyota drops to an estimated 260 miles when buyers select all-terrain tires.


That reduction follows ordinary physics rather than a boardroom plot. All-terrain tires use deeper tread blocks, heavier construction, and compounds that prioritize loose-surface grip over low rolling resistance. They also produce more noise, which gives the Woodland a useful soundtrack for driving slowly toward a campsite.


The bZ Woodland returns estimated figures of 127 MPGe city, 107 MPGe highway, and 117 MPGe combined with all-season tires. Toyota lists 117 MPGe city, 100 MPGe highway, and 109 MPGe combined with all-terrain tires.


Charging performance looks less impressive beside newer 800-volt electric vehicles. Each SUV accepts up to 150 kW at a compatible DC fast charger. Toyota estimates a 10%-to-80% session in approximately 30 minutes, while Subaru quotes roughly 28 minutes.


The NACS port provides a practical benefit. Owners can connect directly to compatible Tesla Superchargers instead of carrying a separate connector for every road trip. Each SUV can also use CCS equipment with an adapter, supports Plug & Charge on compatible networks, and can precondition the battery before a fast-charging stop.


Charging advice



Use all-season tires if highway range carries greater weight than loose-surface grip.


Precondition the battery before reaching a DC fast charger.


Plan long trips around a 10%-to-80% charging window.


Check charger compatibility before leaving home.


Carry the appropriate adapter for older CCS and J1772 stations.


The Trailseeker has one software weakness that deserves attention. Electrek reports that Subaru's system can locate charging stations but does not automatically build a route around battery state and charger availability. Toyota's related EV software also deserves a hands-on test before purchase, because a large screen does not guarantee useful trip planning.


A driver can own a vehicle with 281 miles of range and still spend an evening searching for a charger. That takes a certain talent.


Trail capability


Toyota gives the Woodland 8.4 inches of ground clearance. Subaru lists 8.3 inches for the Trailseeker. The difference measures 0.1 inch, or approximately 2.5 millimeters, which roughly equals the thickness of a small stack of credit cards.


That figure will not decide a trail challenge. Tire sidewalls, approach geometry, suspension calibration, turning radius, body protection, and traction software carry greater weight. Subaru's first-drive evaluation found that the Trailseeker handled muddy paths and standing water with confidence, although the test did not represent severe off-road use.


Toyota equips every Woodland with X-MODE, Grip Control, a Multi-Terrain Monitor, and a 360-degree overhead camera. Grip Control manages motor output and braking at low speeds, helping the vehicle maintain steady progress when one or more tires lose traction.


Subaru uses X-MODE with its own calibration and drive-mode presentation. The system manages electric-motor output and braking to help the Trailseeker cross snow, dirt, mud, and steep grades. Subaru also brings its familiar Symmetrical all-wheel-drive identity to a vehicle that does not use a gasoline engine or a driveshaft.


The branding may differ, but the underlying logic remains similar. The software tries to keep the tires rotating at a useful speed instead of allowing one tire to spin enthusiastically while the vehicle remains in the same place.


Both vehicles tow up to 3,500 pounds. That rating supports a small utility trailer, lightweight personal watercraft, or compact camping trailer. Owners still need to account for trailer brakes, payload, passengers, cargo, weather, and range loss. Electric motors produce strong low-speed torque, but a loaded trailer can make a battery gauge behave like a nervous accountant.


Size and cargo room


The bZ Woodland measures 190.2 inches long, 73.2 inches wide, and 65.9 inches tall. Its wheelbase measures 112.2 inches. Metric figures work out to approximately 4,831 millimeters long, 1,859 millimeters wide, 1,674 millimeters tall, and 2,850 millimeters between the axles.


Toyota stretched the body by nearly six inches compared with the standard bZ and added additional rear cargo height. With the rear seats folded, the Woodland provides up to 74.3 cubic feet of cargo volume. Behind the second row, published estimates place capacity near 33 cubic feet.


Subaru places the Trailseeker closer to the Outback in size than the smaller Subaru Solterra. The company reports 97.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and about 75 inches of cargo length with the rear seats folded.

The cabins share a 14-inch center display, a 7-inch driver information display, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, USB-C ports, and dual phone-charging pads. For frequent towing or long highway trips, test each vehicle under realistic conditions. Cold temperatures, high speeds, roof loads, steep grades, and trailer weight can reduce the advertised range quickly. Batteries, like teenagers, do not enjoy being asked to carry everything while pretending nothing has changed.


For most shoppers, the Trailseeker wins the Toyota bZ Woodland vs. Subaru Trailseeker contest on value. The Woodland remains a sensible pick for buyers who want Toyota ownership and a shorter trim list, but Subaru delivers the same core powertrain, similar capability, and equal towing capacity for substantially less money.
