Things Every Speaker Should Avoid Doing Before Delivering A Speech
Delivering a speech in front of a crowd is a daunting task. Such a demanding responsibility often fuels anxiety and nervousness, even in experienced speakers. And due to being highly vulnerable in such a panic-ridden state, even the smallest mistakes can cause a person to crumble. Therefore, it is essential to know what these mistakes are and how to avoid them.
Overlooking physical preparation
Speakers often invest their full attention into speech training, neglecting crucial health parameters. This overlooking can be detrimental to their performance. Firstly, the speaker should get a proper night of sleep, at least 8 hours. Furthermore, hydration is key. Therefore, you should ensure adequate water intake.
Writing and editing till the last minute
If a speech is to be delivered, you should have it written as early as possible. This allows for a thorough refinement of the written material. It also enables the speaker to memorise it earlier. Leaving this process to the last night can be very challenging.

... Furthermore, you should not be constantly making changes to the finished content, especially once you reach the venue. While you should make a change if you notice a fundamental mistake, second-guessing your content can be detrimental. It is also recommended not to obsess over memorising the whole speech. Rather, leave room for flexibility.
Calming yourself the wrong way
This is a mistake many speakers make. Being nervous before getting on stage is completely normal. However, it is the method of calming oneself that many get wrong. Consuming excessive amounts of caffeine via coffee or energy drinks is not recommended. Similarly, consuming alcohol to calm your nerves is not advisable either. The former increases heart rate whilst the latter impairs cognitive function. Instead, you should hydrate yourself, do controlled breathing exercises, or take a short walk.
Making the wrong apparel choice
Making the wrong apparel choice can significantly impact your performance. Choosing the right clothes makes more of a difference than many realise. While speakers largely understand how to align their clothing style with the event setting, they often make a fitting mistake. It is essential to avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes, as they restrict your movement. In fact, wardrobe guidance is a key part of what a celebrity coach addresses with their clients.
Forgetting to warm up the voice
Delivering a speech requires you to speak for a prolonged period. Naturally, you do not want to sound stiff or crack your voice. Speakers, while fixating on remembering the speech, often neglect a vocal warm-up. Therefore, it is essential to do a few vocal exercises, such as reading the text aloud, stretching your mouth, or humming, before taking the stage.
Conclusion
In addition to the considerations discussed above, it is essential to arrive at the venue early, settle in, and get comfortable on the stage. While these cover the short window before the event, it is equally essential to avoid mistakes throughout your broader public speaking journey. Therefore, it is advisable to seek lessons from a speech training coach to enhance your skills.
