The philosophical tradition of Sanatana Dharma is not merely about Dharma or religion, but it goes far beyond that. In essence, it speaks about principles and ideas that preserve order, balance, and harmony among people within the universe and in the societal framework. Sanatana Dharma consists of multiple layers that correspond to diverse aspects of life and reality. Among these are Samanya Dharma and Vishesha Dharma. These concepts illustrate how ethics and morals can be adapted to different walks of life.  Hence, it can be both individual and universal at the same time.

Samanya Dharma is also identified as the idea of universal duty. Their teachings cover a range of ethical values. For instance, these include virtues such as “Daya” or compassion, “Dama” or self-control, “Satya” or truthfulness, “Ahimsa” or non-violence, and “Dana” or generosity. Irrespective of their role in the world, social background, or age, these values are pertinent to the lives of all human beings.

The holy texts of the ancient Hindu religion unswervingly emphasize these widely shared values. They ...
... portray them as fundamental to personal character development and the preservation of social harmony. The principles that make up Samanya Dharma are at their core. Hence, that makes them eternal and unchanging. Together, they form the vital moral fabric of a fair and strong society. These suitably guide people to live holistic lives of integrity and responsibility.

In contrast, Vishesha Dharma points to duties and responsibilities that cater to the needs of an individual. Such duties and tasks vary a lot depending on the professional context, abilities, social position, and the stage of life one is in. For example, a teacher’s task is to educate and train his students, and a soldier’s responsibility is to protect the nation from foreign invasion even when he faces insurmountable and challenging situations. Likewise, a parent is required to perform certain duties that are different from those of a student. Usually, these duties have always been linked to the ideas of varna or social classification and ashrama or stages of life. However, in a more modern sense, such roles are understood within the context of the roles one is supposed to play in life, which is persistently applicable to all societies.

The main difference between Vishesha Dharma and Samanya Dharma lies in their flexibility and scope. The principles and tenets within Samanya Dharma remain universally constant irrespective of individual position and context. On the other hand, Vishesha Dharma is largely dynamic and relevant to a person’s specific situation and context. Vishesha Dharma correctly recognizes that people can come from all walks of life, can live under diverse conditions, and the ethical considerations should be adapted to their specific tasks and roles that they need to perform in this lifetime.

For instance, the idea of Ahimsa or non-violence is considered a noble virtue within the scope of Samanya Dharma. However, a person serving as a police officer or a soldier may need to resort to the use of force or violence. Because it is their duty to preserve order and shield others. Hence, ethics should be adapted according to the specific situations that are applicable to every individual.
