Running a small business means wearing a dozen hats — and "tax strategist" is usually the one owners put off longest. But tax planning isn't something you do once a year in April; it's a year-round discipline that can meaningfully change how much of your revenue you actually keep. Below are seven strategies small business owners should be reviewing well before the fourth quarter closes.

1. Choose the Right Entity Structure — and Revisit It Annually

Whether you operate as a sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corp, or C-corp has a direct impact on your tax exposure, self-employment tax, and ability to deduct certain expenses. A structure that made sense at $80,000 in revenue may be costing you thousands once you cross into six figures. Many owners set up their entity once and never look at it again, missing opportunities like S-corp election to reduce self-employment tax on distributions.

2. Maximize Retirement Plan Contributions

SEP IRAs, Solo 401(k)s, and SIMPLE IRAs aren't just retirement tools — they're some of the most powerful tax deductions available to small business owners. Contribution limits ...
... are higher than most people realize, and for owner-only businesses, a Solo 401(k) can allow both "employee" and "employer" contributions in the same year.

3. Time Income and Expenses Strategically

If you're on a cash basis, you have more control than you think over which tax year income and expenses land in. Accelerating deductible purchases into the current year, or delaying invoicing until January, can shift your taxable income between years — useful if you expect to be in a different tax bracket next year.

4. Take Full Advantage of the Section 179 Deduction

Instead of depreciating equipment, vehicles, or software purchases over several years, Section 179 allows many small businesses to deduct the full purchase price in the year the asset is placed in service. This is especially valuable for businesses making capital investments in growth years.

5. Review Your Payroll and Owner Compensation Structure

For S-corp owners, the IRS requires "reasonable compensation" — pay yourself too little and you risk an audit flag; pay yourself too much and you lose the self-employment tax savings the S-corp structure was designed to provide. Getting this balance right requires an actual calculation, not a guess.

6. Track Deductions You're Probably Missing

Home office deductions, vehicle mileage, health insurance premiums for self-employed owners, and continuing education costs are commonly under-claimed — often because owners don't have a system for capturing them throughout the year rather than reconstructing them in March.

7. Don't Wait Until Filing Season to Talk to a CPA

The strategies above only work if they're implemented before December 31. A tax preparer filing your return in April can only report what already happened; a CPA involved in ongoing tax planning can help you make decisions in October and November that change the outcome. Firms that offer year-round tax planning and preparation services typically build a mid-year and Q4 check-in into their process specifically to catch these opportunities while there's still time to act.

Small business tax planning isn't about aggressive loopholes — it's about not leaving legitimate deductions and structuring opportunities on the table because nobody looked for them in time. Owners who treat tax strategy as an ongoing conversation with their accountant, rather than a once-a-year filing event, consistently keep more of what they earn. If your business has grown, changed structure, or added employees this year, it's worth a proactive review with a firm that handles small business accounting and tax planning rather than waiting for filing season to find out what you missed.
