Verona Hotels: The Historical Attractions Of Verona
Verona is a city in northern Italy, in the province of Veneto, and is famous as being the setting for Shakespeare''s Romeo and Juliet. The ancient walled city of Verona enjoyed glory days throughout the medieval and into the Renaissance period. Today, the rich history of Verona offers plenty to see and do for tourists.
Although not as popular as nearby Venice, many return from a tour of Italy favouring Verona of the two cities as a more relaxed and less crowded place to visit. As you might expect, there are a good selection of Verona hotels on offer through operators like Octopus Travel that can cater for travellers on a range of different budgets.
The architectural beauty of Verona is one of the principal assets of the city, and has resulted in World Heritage status being bestowed by UNESCO. The remains of a Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st Century BC - the Arena ? are to this day the site of entertainment, and often the venue for opera. This amphitheatre is the third largest of its kind in Italy, and while only a fa?ade of the exterior remains, the interior is very well preserved.
Most of the legacy ...
... of the Roman Empire was destroyed in medieval times by earthquake, which in turn lead to the construction of much of what is now left of the old walled city.
The Castelvecchio is a 14th Century castle which sits on the banks of the river Aldige, and is now home to the city''s art museum. There is a good selection of mediaeval and renaissance paintings within, with the ramparts and fortifications of the castle in themselves presenting a good site to explore.
The Piazza delle Erbe was formerly the site of the forum during the era of the Roman Empire, and is still one of the focal points of the city. The Lamberti Tower (Torre Lamberti) is one of the tallest towers in Verona, with the clock tower offering excellent views not just of the Piazza delle Erbe below, but right across the city.
The Piazza delle Erbe also contains an original Roman statue called the Madonna Verona, a sculpture standing atop a fountain constructed in 380 AD. This is the oldest ancient monument in the Piazza delle Erbe, which is home to historical constructions from throughout the ages that have all benefitted from the recent refurbishment and restoration of much of the square.
