Christmas Shopping In The 21st Century
An increasing number of consumers are turning to the internet when purchasing goods, greater variety, better pricing, the ability to shop from the comfort of your home and avoid queues, are just some of the advantages. Shopping online is particularly desirable when it comes to the purchase of Christmas gifts.
Each year, by the middle of November, shopping centers and high streets throughout the country are packed with ever more frantic shoppers, in search of original and desirable Christmas gifts. The thought of donning many layers to walk from cold high street, to warm retail outlets, amongst a swarm of likeminded individuals, is far from appealing to many.
Men are heralded as the driving force behind the increase in online sales, armed with the knowledge of what they want; they choose the quickest and least painless way in which to obtain it. It would be foolish however to dismiss the lure of infinite window shopping to the fairer sex.
Another distinct advantage online shopping holds over traditional high street retailers is the availability of the most desirable Christmas gifts. The days of hunting ...
... multiple shops for this year''s successor to Buzz Lightyear, Nintendo Wii or Tamagotchi are all but gone.
Online auction sites such as eBay also provide an additional destination for Christmas gifts, should there be an unlikely online shortage of the latest craze. Perhaps however, the generation of online Christmas shoppers will miss out on the spirit of Christmas.
Surely part of the experience of Christmas shopping is the crowds, the sense of excitement and anticipation, as Christmas music fills the ears of every man woman and child throughout the city. Late night ice-skating and mulled wine in the central squares, and much, much more Christmas music.
Watching the Christmas lights be turned on by a minor celebrity, open air ice-skating in the city square, mulled wine and Santa hats. These are all modest pleasures afforded to those that brave the hustle and bustle of the high street, in search of Christmas gifts.
Online shopping will never replace the traditional last minute dash for Christmas gifts. It may however provide solace to those for whom Christmas shopping has become a dirge.
