Hotels In Cancun: An Introduction To Cancun
Cancun is a Mexican city situated on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Cancun now has a worldwide reputation as a party city, but is in fact a relatively new development, as construction began as recently as 1970. This self styled rival to Acapulco is now an established Caribbean tourist destination. Here are a few of the things to see and do in and around Cancun.
Swimming in the Caribbean is a popular pastime, but those venturing from many of the beaches in Cancun should be aware that the open sea is subject to strong currents and an undertow, and so only suitable for experienced swimmers.
More sheltered waters can be found on the Cancun beaches that face the nearby Isla Mujeres. Whichever beach you choose to spend time on you''ll meet locals selling goods such as jewellery, sea shells and sarongs, which can make inexpensive souvenirs if you are prepared to haggle.
Swimming with dolphins is on offer for the adventurous. There are several ways to do this both on Isla Mujeres and in Cancun. Perhaps the most accessible facility is the interactive aquarium that is found in the centre of the hotel district ...
... of Cancun.
No Caribbean tourist destination would be complete without water sports and sailing. Catamaran tours are particularly popular, and a great way to see some sights. Jet skis are also on offer on many beaches.
When you want some time away from the beach, the Xcaret Eco Park about 45 miles south of Cancun offers something different. Xcaret was first an important Mayan archaeological site, subsequently developed into a theme park featuring original remains as well as some purpose built modern features.
The advertised ''eco'' credentials of Xcaret have been criticised by some, as much of the park was terraformed through destructive techniques such as dynamiting. However, although now a theme park, the Mayan temple is genuine and worth seeing, and many of the attractions are popular with families.
An extensive underwater cave system has also been developed for tourism in the form of the Hidden Worlds Cenote Adventure Park. Some of these beautiful caves featured on a recent IMAX film, and can now be explored through snorkelling and rides on zip lines. Bonny Kominek has visited Cancun four times in the last five years.
