Located in the heart of the Algarve region of Portugal is the spectacular purpose-built resort of Vilamoura. With work on the resort started back in 1974, the resort is still growing and is now one of the best tourist destinations in Europe.

People have lived in the region of Vilamoura for over two thousand years, and the Roman remains have been well preserved with many artefacts transferred to a nearby museum. The remains include a fine example of Roman baths where the residents of the original fishing village used to bathe.

Work on Vilamoura began back in 1974 and has continued through to this very day. What makes the resort so spectacular is the high concentration of 5 star hotels compared with many other sites along the coast. If you want to stay in Vilamoura, but can''t quite afford the 5 star experience, the resort covers 20 square kilometres, so there are plenty of other options.

Like any modern resort Vilamoura is well known for its excellent golf courses, of which there are many. There are a wide range of other leisure activities, from big game fishing excursions to shooting and sporting facilities ...

The resort is based around a central Marina, and many activities start there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Particularly popular are the tours of caves along the local coast which can only be accessed from the water and are well worth a look.
