Madiera is a year-long holiday destination. The beaches, thick forests, rugged mountains and deep volcanic pools entice summer travellers. The sleepy villages, golf and historic sounds along with a mild climate attract winter holidaymakers.

Funchal is the island''s capital and has much to offer visitors. The city dates back to the 15th century when it was an important shipping centre and today is one of the most beautiful cities, not just in Madeira, but in the whole of Portugal.

Madeira Botanical Gardens is a great place to relax when the heat is cranked up during a typical summer afternoon. There are more than 2000 plants from across the world spread throughout these hilltop gardens. The views over the city and bay are mesmerising, especially at sunset.

Se Cathedral in the centre of Funchal''s old town, is the most visited monument on the island. It was commissioned by King Dom Manuel I through the Portugese explorer Gil Eanes. The cathedral was built between 1493 and 1517 and is a fine example of traditional Portugese architecture and the ceiling is made from local wood.

Santa Clara Convent is ...
... another beautiful national monument that dates back to the 15th century. It makes good use of azulejo tiles that when they catch the light look stunning.

A fine display of mannerist architecture, Se Lourenco Palace is a mix between fort and palace, boasting everything from the regal Noble Salon to the sumptuous Audience Hall and picturesque gardens.

Located in the former bishop''s palace, Funchal''s Sacred Art Museum was founded in 1955. It now contains a well-rounded collection of Flemish paintings, religious sculptures and gold pieces from the 16th and 18th centuries. The building also has a bird tower that dates back to the 17th century and good use has been made of azulejos tiles inside to depict faith, hope and charity.

Another worthwhile experience is to take the cable car up to Monte a small mountain village. You can then race down on a unique wicker toboggan. This is great fun and not just for the young and adventurous.

Outside of Funchal, Madeira is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Laurisilva achieved this status because of its abundance of laurel and mahogany trees, but it also has a plethora of rare flowers and stunning waterfalls.
