The Web, as the World Wide Web or WWW is generally known, is a system of assorted interlinked documents through the Internet. By using a software application called a web browser, one can view these documents, called web pages.

Web pages can contain texts, images, videos, sounds, and other multimedia contents, and can be navigated from a page to another through the use of hyperlinks. In March 1989, using concepts from the previous hypertext systems, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, an English engineer and computer scientist and now the World Wide Web Consortium Director, issued a proposal for what would eventually become the Web.
