The Essential Bangkok

A fascinating country, Thailand is of course well known today as one of Asia''s most turbulent and troubled spots. However it remains at once a beautiful, spiritual destination and a busy, thriving resort where visitors flock in droves year on year. Its buzzing capital of Bangkok in particular draws so many from all over the world.
Bangkok is striking first and foremost for its immense size. Suffering from heavy pollution and living in seemingly constant chaos, you have to head there knowing what you''re likely to be faced with if you are to enjoy it and appreciate it.
Poverty is also rife, but nobody seems to be unhappy. The very people who have nothing will give all and it is a rather humbling experience. A cruise along the Chao Phraya to see how the lowest levels of society live. The river is the heart of Bangkok where children come to play, men come to fish, women come to clean and gossip and everyone is happy and full of smiles.
On the highways of the city, if you''re feeling adventurous then you might want to take a tuk-tuk ride. However it is certainly not for the faint-hearted, so be warned.
The ...
... spiritual life of the city is extraordinary, and many appreciate the glorious temples in the area, particularly those in the Old City on Rattanakosin Island: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Inside the Grand Palace you''ll get to see the monumental Wat Pha Kaew. Elsewhere take a visit to the Wat Pho and you''ll get to see the largest reclining Buddha in the world, whilst the picture postcard view of Wat Arun across the river is worth seeing.
Nonetheless Bangkok remains a thriving, modern city. When you''ve explored the temples, you may suddenly find yourself walking down the aisles at the incredible shopping malls where you''ll see well-known western designer labels on offer. For cheaper local crafts and materials, head to any of the large and sprawling markets around town.
The Siam Centre, Siam Square, Siam Paragon, MBK and The Emporium are all great places to go for some retail therapy, opening their doors to visitors to go and buy luxury gifts to take home. Alternatively, try the Patpong Nightmarket, Suan Lum Night Bazaar, the Khoa San Road and the Chatuchak Weekend Market for interesting discoveries, and even simply to enjoy the experience of visiting a buzzing Thai market.
You''re sure to find somewhere good to stay, whether you''re on a budget or looking for something that little bit more luxurious. Even if you settle for a cheap place to rest your head, you''ll be met with splendid service and great local knowledge. In all, Bangkok is the perfect place to head, whatever it is you''re going in search for. Bonny Kominek is a freelance travel writer with a love of Asian travel.
