Renovating a running track involves more than just putting down a new surface. The steps before that — removing the old material and restoring the foundation — are what make or break the project. Here is a clear, step-by-step guide to help you through the process.

Step 1: Secure the Work Area
Set up barriers around the construction zone. Place warning signs at every entrance. Keep unauthorized people out. This protects workers and the public, especially at schools and parks.

Step 2: Check Underground Utilities
Map out all underground utilities before demolition. Water pipes, electrical lines, and gas conduits may run beneath the track. Disconnect or isolate any lines in the construction zone to prevent accidents.

Step 3: Control Dust with Water
Track removal creates dust. Spray the area with water before and during demolition. Reapply frequently in dry or windy weather. This keeps dust from spreading.

Step 4: Remove the Old Surface
Use machines to break up and remove the old material. Follow with hand tools for edges and hard-to-reach areas. Remove all old surface material ...
... completely.

Step 5: Handle Residual Adhesive
Scrape off raised patches of old glue. Leave firmly bonded adhesive in place if it does not create bumps. The surface must be smooth and even.

Step 6: Clear Debris
Remove waste regularly. Old rubber, adhesive, and broken material pile up fast. A clean site is safer and more efficient.

Step 7: Inspect the Foundation
Walk the entire surface. Look for water pooling, concrete cracks, and asphalt problems. Document all issues. This determines what repairs are needed.

Step 8: Fix Water Pooling
Fill low spots with fine aggregate and flexible material. Ensure proper drainage so water flows away from the surface.

Step 9: Repair the Foundation
For concrete, cut V-grooves along cracks and fill with flexible compound. Install expansion joints. For damaged asphalt, remove and replace affected sections. For oil bleeding, excavate and replace entirely.

Step 10: Final Inspection
Walk the surface again. Check for uneven spots, loose material, and drainage problems. Fix any issues before surfacing.
