How To Build A Skincare-first Makeup Routine For Indian Skin
How to Build a Skincare-First Makeup Routine for Indian Skin
Indian skin has specific needs that most generic beauty routines do not account for. The combination of humidity, heat, and the range of undertones across Indian complexions means a routine built for Western or East Asian skin conditions will often fall apart by midday. A skincare-first approach means treating your skin before you put any makeup on it, so the makeup has something stable and prepared to sit on.
Here is how to build this routine from the first step to the last.
Step 1: Cleanser
Start with a face wash suited to your skin type. Oily skin needs a gel or foam cleanser with salicylic acid or niacinamide to control excess sebum before you apply anything. Dry skin needs a cream or milk cleanser that removes impurities without stripping the skin barrier. This step matters for makeup because any residual overnight skincare, sunscreen, or surface oil left on the skin will mix with your foundations and reduce how long it stays in place.
Step 2: Toner
A toner ...
... is not optional if you want your skincare actives to absorb properly. After cleansing, the skin's pH is slightly disrupted. A toner brings it back to the mildly acidic range where serums and moisturisers absorb most effectively. For Indian skin dealing with pigmentation or uneven tone, a glycolic acid or niacinamide toner used consistently over time also helps fade post-acne marks and sun damage. Apply with clean hands or a cotton pad and let it absorb fully before moving to the next step.
Step 3: Serum
serums are the highest concentration step in any skincare routine. For Indian skin, vitamin C serum applied in the morning is the most impactful choice because it actively works against the UV-driven pigmentation that is extremely common in Indian complexions. Niacinamide serum is the second most useful option, addressing both oil control and brightening simultaneously. Apply two to three drops, press into the skin rather than rubbing, and wait sixty seconds before applying moisturiser over it.
Step 4: Moisturiser
Every skin type needs a face moisturiser , including oily skin. Skipping moisturiser on oily skin causes the skin to produce more sebum to compensate, which makes foundation break down faster. For oily and combination skin, use a lightweight gel moisturiser. For dry skin, use a cream formula with glycerin or ceramides. The moisturiser creates the smooth, hydrated surface that prevents foundation from looking patchy, settling into pores, or oxidising darker over the course of the day.
Step 5: SPF
This is the step most Indian women skip inside their makeup routine and it is the most consequential one for long-term skin health. UV exposure is the primary driver of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone in Indian complexions. Apply a broad-spectrum face sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every single morning, even indoors. Let it absorb for two to three minutes before applying primer or foundation over it. Do not rely on the SPF in your foundation as your only sun protection.
Step 6: Face Primer
A face primer is the bridge between your skincare and your makeup. It creates a smooth, even surface for foundation to sit on, fills the appearance of pores, and significantly extends how long your makeup lasts. For oily skin, use a matte or pore-minimising formula. For dry skin, use a hydrating or illuminating primer that adds luminosity beneath the foundation. Apply a small amount evenly across the face and wait two minutes before applying foundation. Primer that is not given time to set will mix with foundation and reduce its effectiveness.
Step 7: Foundation and Makeup
With your skin properly prepared, your foundation will apply more evenly, last significantly longer, and look more natural than it would on unprepared skin. The skincare layers underneath also mean you need less foundation to achieve even coverage, because the skin surface itself looks better before you start.
The reason Indian women often experience foundation that oxidises, breaks down in humidity, or looks cakey by afternoon is almost always because the skin underneath was not properly prepared. The makeup is not the problem. The preparation is.
