Colonial establishments in India were built during that period of history which was dominated by the European colonisers who had settled in it during imperialisation. Most of them are villas, residences or summer houses which have been converted into hotels. These hotels occupy a huge market in India. Many of them rank themselves above the new breed of hotels that we see mushrooming at every nook and corner of the country today. It attracts a lot of tourists and adds to the business of travel and tourism in India and enjoys a prestige that is born out of the fact that it belongs to the colonial era which is synonymous with a charm of its kind. The thing that makes it stand apart from other hotels is its distinguishing architecture.

This era was infamously famous for reasons known to all but architecture made during this period is marvelled by all. The Dutch, Portuguese and the French are still praised when one enters a hotel built by the colonial rulers. Some examples of top-notch colonial hotels in India would be The Verandah in the Forest or the Barr House in Matheran, Hotel Colonial Villa in Lansdowne, The Imperial ...
... in New Delhi, Le Colonial in Cochin, Neemrana Fort Palace located in Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Hotel De L'orient Pondicherry, Le Royal Meridian Mumbai, The Oberoi Cecil, Shimla, just to name a few.

When it comes to colonial hotels in Darjeeling, there are a number of such hotels filling the streets of the city. The Mayfair Resort, Hotel Garuda, Hotel Apsara, et al, decorates the picturesque town which has a strong colonial flavour. For the more budgeted traveller, hotels like Cozy Nest Homestay, The Pine Ridge Hotel ,the Old Bellevue Heritage Hotel, etc are the preferred ones.

But the Windamere Hotel in Darjeeling falls in the top ten (colonial) hotels in India. The backdrop of the Himalayas makes it a heavenly abode and is very famous among honeymooning couples or people looking for the ideal retreat. It is cradled in the ‘land of thunderbolts' and it has got a unique and adventurous character to it and therefore, attracts a lot of foreign as well as indigenous crowd.
