Introduction to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Route
Most people spend months researching this journey and still feel underprepared at Kathmandu airport. The Kailash Mansarovar route is complicated, and most websites skip what matters: border wait times, road conditions after Saga, and how fast altitude catches you near Dolma La. Holy Kailash Tours has been organizing trips to Mount Kailash, Tibet, for years. This guide comes from that experience.

Where Are Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Located?
Mount Kailash is in western Tibet at 6,638 meters. No other major peak crowds it. Lake Mansarovar is 30 kilometers southeast, at 4,590 meters, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. Both sites are in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Darchen, the town at the mountain's base, is where the Kora starts.

Why the Kailash Mansarovar Route Is Spiritually Important
Kailash is sacred to four religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. Lord Shiva's home. The navel of the universe. Bathing in Lake Mansarovar is believed to erase lifetimes of karmic debt. For most pilgrims, this isn't a trip. It's something ...
... they've waited their whole lives to do.

Main Routes to Kailash Mansarovar from Nepal
Three options connect Nepal to Mount Kailash:

Via Kerung Border (overland): Most popular and affordable. Kathmandu to Kailash by road. 10 to 14 days.
Via Lhasa (overland): Adds Potala Palace and major monasteries before the Yatra. 16 to 20 days.
Helicopter via Simikot-Hilsa: Fastest. Fly to Simikot, helicopter across the border, and then overland. Best for limited time or mobility. 10 to 12 days.

Holy Kailash Tours arranges all three with kailash travel packages built around each route.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Kerung Border
Kathmandu to Kerung Border Journey
Six to seven hours through Trishuli, Dhunche, and Syabrubesi to reach Rasuwagadhi on the Nepali side. Most Holy Kailash Tours itineraries overnight near the border before crossing.
Entering Tibet from Kerung Port
One to three hours at immigration during busy seasons. All permits are checked here and none can be obtained at the border. Once through, Tibetan guides and vehicles take over.
Kerung to Saga: First Stage of the Journey
Kerung is at 2,800 meters. Saga, your first overnight in Tibet, is at 4,600 meters. That gain over 500 kilometers is a key acclimatization window. Spend one night in Saga before pushing west.

Saga to Lake Mansarovar Route
The route heads west on the Friendship Highway toward Paryang, then Mansarovar. Around 500 to 600 kilometers, one to two days of driving.
Key stops:

Paryang (4,500m): Overnight, basic guesthouses
Mayum La Pass (5,216m): Highest point of the drive
Hor: First view of Lake Mansarovar

Four-wheel-drive is not optional on this section.

Sacred Experience at Lake Mansarovar
The lake is impossibly blue. Cold, even in summer. Kailash sits visible to the north. Most groups spend a full day here: a parikrama (88 km, usually by vehicle), a ritual bath, puja at the shore, sunrise and sunset from the bank. The lake is at 4,590 meters. Rest and hydrate on arrival.

Lake Mansarovar to Darchen: Gateway to Mount Kailash
Darchen is 30 kilometers north of Mansarovar at 4,600 meters, under an hour by road. Holy Kailash Tours arranges accommodation here in every kailash group tour package.

Mount Kailash Kora Route Explained
The Kora is a 52-kilometer circuit around the mountain, completed in three days. Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains walk clockwise. Bon practitioners counterclockwise.
Day 1 Kora: Darchen to Dirapuk Trek
20 km, 6 to 8 hours. North along the Lha Chu valley. The south face of Kailash comes into full view. Dirapuk Monastery at the end has the best north face views of the entire route.
Day 2 Kora: Dirapuk to Dolma La Pass to Zutulpuk
22 km, 8 to 10 hours. The hardest day. Steep climb to Dolma La, then a long descent to Zutulpuk.
Crossing Dolma La Pass: Highest Point of the Trek
Dolma La is at 5,636 meters. Prayer flags, wind, sometimes snow. Gauri Kund, a sacred glacial lake, sits just below the pass. Many pilgrims call this the most emotional point of the journey.
Day 3 Kora: Zutulpuk to Darchen
10 km, mostly downhill, 3 to 4 hours.

Overland Route vs Helicopter Route to Kailash Mansarovar
Overland is cheaper with gradual acclimatization. Helicopter is faster, better for limited time or mobility. Most first-timers with flexibility choose overland.

Acclimatisation Tips During the Journey

Don't skip nights in Kerung and Saga. That time does real work.
Drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily above 3,500 meters.
No alcohol the first three to four days at altitude.
AMS symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness, appetite loss. If they don't ease with rest, descend.
Ask your doctor about Diamox before leaving home.

Best Time for the Kailash Mansarovar Route
Season runs May through September. Late May and September are the best choices for first-timers. June is the busiest. July to August brings monsoon road risks. October gets cold and permits often close.

Travel Permits Required for the Kailash Route
Tibet requires five permits: Chinese Group Visa, Tibet Travel Permit, Alien Travel Permit, Military Area Permit, and Restricted Area Permit. None obtainable at the border. Holy Kailash Tours handles all applications in every kailash travel package. Budget USD 150 to 250 for permits alone.
