Few can deny the inevitable lure of sweets - we pour a little sweetener in our coffee every morning, snatch a donut (or two) and hanker for a candy-bar pick-me-up in the mid-afternoon, and then top of a hectic and often stressful workday with a scoop or two of Hunka Chunka Burning Fudge or some other delightful creation at a favorite ice cream shop.

We convince ourselves that a little sweet now and then won't kill us.

Actually sweets don't really do anything for us except excite our taste buds. Sugar is considered to be an empty-calorie food. Nevertheless, sugar has long been used to help make certain foods more palatable, which should make us wonder why we eat them in the first place.

If they don't taste good without sugar disguising their taste, what good are they? Most of us don't even know that sugar is addictive. Yes, you read that right. Sugar is not a natural product. It's a refined product.

Sugar cane in its raw form contains various vitamins and minerals, but then we process it, refine it to its pristine and white form, which eventually makes into most of the foods we eat and drink without ...
... realizing it's even in there.

Refined white sugar, sucrose, is a nearly indigestible product that cannot be broken down by the body without added help from stored vitamins and minerals in our bodies. What happens when we run low on those? We run out of energy.

After the body works overtime to break down and digest refined sugars found in breakfast cereals, canned or bottled fruit juices, sodas and even our favorite diet shakes, it then enters the bloodstream. There, sugar sets off a chain reaction that starts with our body creating insulin.

So what's the big deal? Think about this: because the pancreas is working overtime to create that insulin to counteract the effect of that sugar in our bloodstream, it's not creating glucagon - after all, you can only do so many things at once - a very important hormone that tells our body when to release stores of fat for energy. The end result? Fat!

But wait! There's more on top of the confusion in our pancreas, and the inability of our body to burn fat for energy, sugar also wreaks havoc on the body's ability to regulate its pH balance and create an acidic environment, which leads to feelings of sluggishness and inability to lose weight.

In order to prevent the body from becoming too acidic, the body will pull reserves of calcium from bones and teeth to help maintain a balance, which leaves bones unprotected against conditions such as arthritis and osteoporosis.

In addition, the breakdown of sugar in the body produces pyruvic acid, which has an extremely detrimental affect on cellular structures. Remember that every organ, bone and muscle (including the brain and heart) is made up of cells.

Can you imagine what happens when the capacity of cells to receive vital oxygen is decreased due to such cellular changes?

Well, you might say, then just switch to artificial sweeteners. Unfortunately, these aren't good for you either. Products like Aspartame, Sucralose and Splenda have long been the topic of controversial positive-negative studies, but the bottom line is that such products aren't natural and have been linked to a multitude of health issues for those who consume them.

Sugar does more than just rot your teeth. It does more than cause you to loosen a button or two. Sugar ingestion leads to fatty acid formation in the blood, and to settle in vital organs like the kidneys, liver, and heart.

Sugar is an insidious ingredient that causes far more damage to the human body than many people realize. Lack of energy, mood swings, cravings, and weight gain, inability to lose weight the list goes on.

Reducing or eliminating sugar completely from your diet is the best way to take care of your body and avoid a multitude of medical and health issues.
