While this was a completely new experience in many industries, many technology companies were already ahead of the curve and had been working with either partially or completely remote teams for years many with team members from around the world. With more experience managing remote employees, tech leaders have learned ways to help their remote team members come together in one strong culture.

Regular communication is key to building a strong remote work culture. We hold weekly virtual meetings where the whole company comes together it helps everyone feel connected. We already had a mental health first aid program but it was really beneficial during this time.

My biggest piece of advice would be to hold weekly virtual “water cooler meetings” that all employees should join. We discuss not only business but also personal life and it allows everyone to come together even though we are distributed.

Having daily occasional synchronicities between team members is essential to removing barriers and improving communication. Working remotely makes it easy to isolate yourself from colleagues without daily face to face interaction. However, regular meetings where employees engage in non-work banter will make people more comfortable with each other, leading to a strong culture.
Recognize employees for their hard work
When working remotely, it’s important that your employees still feel valued and recognized for the hard work they do. Companies should consider dedicating time each week to employee recognition. When someone on your team expresses gratitude and praise for their work, it can help ensure that employees feel valued and remain loyal to your company.
Keep collaboration and inclusiveness alive
Being remote can lead to much less ad-hoc collaboration and more one-on-one conversations. No one wants to spend all day on Zoom, so it’s very important to make sure you keep the spirit of collaboration and inclusiveness alive. Directly asking individuals how they feel is a great step in the right direction.

Communication is key to maintaining a strong culture when the company is now working remotely. Great collaboration tools like Slack allow us to take our favorite office traditions virtual and stay connected across teams.

They should exemplify transparency by communicating regularly and openly with their teams and making sure team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas and thoughts.

The key is that the collaboration environment mirrors the desired corporate communication system. This means everyone in the company participates, not just the engineering team. Non-work participation is just as important to really get to know your team We have food, wellness and pushup channels and more.
