But behind that scoop is an ingredient that is quietly becoming one of China’s most reliable food-grade export products. Whether you are a supplement manufacturer, a beverage brand, or a bakery looking to add a natural green hue and a nutritional boost to your product lineup, the spirulina powder coming out of China is worth a closer look.

And here is the surprising part: the world’s largest spirulina production base is not in California or along some tropical coastline. It is in Inner Mongolia, at a place called Otog Banner.

What You Are Actually Getting
The spirulina powder you purchase from Chinese wholesale suppliers is almost always derived from Arthrospira platensis or Arthrospira maxima, cultivated in open raceway ponds under controlled conditions. The harvesting process is straightforward: the algae are collected, filtered, washed, and spray-dried into a fine powder. Most food-grade spirulina powder produced in China meets GB/T 16919-2022, the national quality standard for edible spirulina powder that covers everything from heavy metal limits to microbial counts and shelf-life requirements.

From a nutritional standpoint, a good food-grade spirulina powder typically contains 60% to 65% protein by dry weight, along with significant amounts of iron, B vitamins, and phycocyanin — the blue pigment that gives spirulina its characteristic color and much of its antioxidant activity. The powder itself is a dark, almost blackish-green, with a fine texture and a mild seaweed aroma.

What you will not find in responsibly produced spirulina is contamination. The Chinese standard sets firm limits on arsenic and lead, and most established suppliers run third-party lab tests on every batch before shipping.

If you are comparison shopping, Chinese wholesale spirulina powder falls into a fairly predictable range. At the lower end, some suppliers offer product for around $4.50 to $8.00 per kilogram, though those prices typically require minimum orders of 100 to 200 kg. For smaller buyers, domestic Chinese pricing often falls between ¥52 and ¥70 per kilogram depending on volume and supplier, with 1 kg minimum orders widely available for sample or small-batch purposes.

As with any commodity, you get what you pay for. Lower-priced spirulina may come from less strictly controlled cultivation conditions or may have a higher carrier load from the drying process. The slightly more expensive offerings — particularly those from suppliers who also hold organic, Halal, Kosher, or FDA-registered facility certifications — tend to offer better batch-to-batch consistency and cleaner certification paperwork for international shipping.

Where Does It Go?
If you are wondering whether spirulina powder actually fits into your product line, the answer is: probably yes. The applications have expanded well beyond tablet supplements.

In beverages, spirulina powder disperses easily in water and has decent heat stability, making it workable for juice blends, protein shakes, and even certain dairy drinks. In solid foods, manufacturers add between 1% and 5% spirulina to noodles, breads, crackers, and snack bars to boost protein content while giving the product an appealing light green tint. Some brands have built entire product identities around spirulina — think green protein powders, spirulina-fortified instant noodles, and naturally colored energy bars.

The beauty of spirulina powder, from a formulation standpoint, is that it does two things at once: it adds nutritional density while also acting as a natural food colorant. That dual function is hard to match with isolated extracts.

Regulatory Standing
If you are exporting finished goods containing spirulina powder to major markets, the regulatory picture is clean. In the United States, spirulina is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in food and supplements. The European Union permits it as a food ingredient, and of course China’s domestic standard is well-established. The Otog region’s spirulina is even recognized under the China-EU Geographical Indications agreement, which simplifies certain trade documentation.

What makes Chinese spirulina powder worth your attention is not just the low price. It is the combination of scale, consistency, and established quality systems. There is a reason a small county in Inner Mongolia supplies 40% of the world’s spirulina. It is not luck. It is decades of refining cultivation methods, building processing infrastructure, and certifying to international standards.
