My opinion is that IATF 16949 is similar to ISO 9001 for cars but much more severe and devolved. It is a Quality Management System for companies in automotive supply chain.
So, if they manufactured parts for cars, such as brakes, engines, electronics, this certification is practically a must.
Believe it or not, but large car companies will not even entertain suppliers that don't comply with IATF 16949. Yes, it's very serious.
What is the purpose of having it (besides ISO 9001)?
So, that's how it goes. While ISO 9001 provides for a solid foundation in quality, IATF 16949 pushes it even further with automotive specific rules.
It focuses more on:
• Defect prevention
• Product safety
• Risk management
• Supplier quality control
Can you believe it? Addressing problems isn't enough – it's having to prevent them from ever occurring.

Well, it's like ISO 9001, but with the added layer of controls, the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) is used.

• APQP, or Advanced Product Quality Planning, as it is known, is a costly and time-consuming process
• Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
• Statistical Process Control (SPC)
• Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
Believe it or not, this is all of the tools that can be used to spot risks before production begins.
Yes, it's not reactive, it's proactive.
What needs to be done at the company?
In my opinion, what companies ought to do is create a very well-structured and analytical system.
They must:
• Process documentation is performed in a detailed manner
• Track defect and performance indicators
• Ensure the quality management of suppliers
• Provide training of staff on essential automotive tools
Well, as they say consistency is the key here. A single error can have a domino effect on the supply chain.
Extreme may sound intense but that's what the automotive industry needs.
There is a more strict certification process (A Bit More Strict)!
As the foundation, therefore, the organization installs ISO 9001. It then includes the specific requirements set by IATF.
Once that is done, there are several rounds of certification audits, such as site audits, process verification, etc.
Once everything is in compliance, Certification is awarded – however, they are very rigorous surveillance audits.
Sounds tough, right? With the right system, however, it is quite achievable!

Yes, it's "can be", but it can be complex. Time and discipline is needed to document, train and control the processes.
Plus, there are not any shortcuts for audits, either.
Once it's all in place, though, it makes a substantial system.
So it's not really significant.
