The global industrial piping market is at an inflection point in 2026. The infrastructure sector is accelerating in India, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe, and so are the demands placed on procurement teams to make the right choices from the get-go. Saudi Arabia and UAE are getting a number of new refineries. The chemical processing belt of India Dahej and Bharuch is getting the biggest boost in the last 10 years. The process infrastructure of the pharmaceutical manufacturing cities in Hyderabad and Ahmedabad are undergoing modernization to meet regulatory standards of international standards. But no matter where these environments are, there is one decision that always arises at the engineering table: which pipe material do you trust for this application
The response to this question is always, never one-size-fits-all. Sagar Steel Corporation has been a manufacturing company for more than two decades, and has collaborated with hundreds of engineering teams in these very regions and most often, the reason for expensive failures is not due to budget or lead time, but due to the selection of the material for the operating ...
... environment. We will dive into the two most detailed pipe specifications in industrial procurement today: Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes and Alloy 20 Pipes, and compare them to other popular pipe materials, to take you into your next project with assurance.Get materials sample sent to your facility that is Certified and Free of charge.
Where Are Carbon Steel Pipes Used — Industries and Geographies That Drive Demand
The Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes are the backbone of energy and infrastructure projects all over the world. They are required for high-pressure transmission pipelines and process piping in the oil and gas industry (gulf countries, western coast of India, and offshore platforms of Southeast Asia) according to API 5L and ASTM A106 specification. They are used in boilers, superheaters, and steam drum assemblies in power plants all over Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, working continuously at temperatures exceeding 600° F. Seamless pipes are used in a variety of applications in the construction industry, ranging from commercial buildings in Mumbai to industrial townships in Surat and Pune.

Alloy 20 Pipes fall into an intermediate niche but one that is still quite essential in its own right. They are most strongly required in those industries where the pipe is directly exposed to the aggressive chemical media. Alloy 20 is a common specification used in chemical processing plants, especially in the Indian states of Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh where plants process sulfuric acid, nitric acid and phosphoric acid, which would routinely require replacement of any other common pipe specification. The pharmaceutical industry all over Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune need it for the process lines where purity and non-reactivity is not a choice, but a necessity. The Middle East fertilizer production plant, the Southeast Asia pulp and paper mill, and the European food processing plant all need it because the chemistry of their process fluids demands it not because it is coated or treated to appear that way.
Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe vs Alloy 20 — And How They Stack Up Against Other Pipe Materials
In the industrial piping arena, most procurement choices are not between just two choices. The materials that engineers are usually testing are Carbon Steel Seamless, Alloy 20, Stainless Steel 316L, ERW Pipes and sometimes Duplex or Super Duplex grades. It's crucial to know their position to make a correct decision.
A Corten Steel Pipe is produced by heating a solid carbon steel billet and perforating it with mandrels without any weld, without any seam and without any joint. The outcome is a structurally uniform pipe that has a high pressure resistance and mechanical strength. It is the most common material for high pressure/high temperature systems that are not chemically corrosive. Unlike ERW pipes, steel strip rolling and welding the edges of the pipe is a more rapid and economical production method, but it is a joint pipe, not suitable for high pressure. If a seamless pipe is required for a refinery pipeline or a boiler, then the ERW pipe cannot be used without considerable risk of safety.
Nickel-iron-chromium alloy 20 (UNS N08020) is a copper- and molybdenum-added nickel-iron-chromium alloy that was developed to resist sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and chloride stress corrosion cracking. It is significantly better than 316L stainless steel, the standard choice for engineers when choosing stainless steel for corrosive applications. The difference is stark: 316L is moderately resistant to mild corrosive conditions, but will sometimes quickly fail in sulfuric acid at concentrations higher than 5 percent. Alloy 20 will tolerate sulfuric acid up to 85 percent concentration. Duplex Seamless Pipe has a combination of high strength and good corrosion resistance, but is designed to be particularly resistant to chloride corrosion and is usually used in offshore and seawater environments, not in acid environments or in chemical processing applications. These materials have different performance spaces and the following table compares them.

The right choice is not always the most expensive choice, but the one that fits well for the operating conditions. For most high pressure industrial systems seamless carbon steel is the most practical and cost effective solution. When acids, sulfur compounds or highly corrosive chemical streams get involved, the answer is always alloy 20. A broad intermediate range of general corrosive uses falls into the category of 316L stainless steel. ERW is the most suitable for low pressure structural and utility use. When the real challenge to the design is the presence of high chloride levels in offshore applications, then Duplex Seamless pipe is the answer.
