What Is Liver Failure? Causes, Symptoms And What Happens To Your Body
Most of us never think about our liver until something goes wrong. It sits quietly on the right side of your abdomen, working around the clock to filter toxins, produce bile, regulate blood sugar, and support hundreds of other vital functions. But when the liver begins to fail, the entire body feels it and the consequences can be life-threatening if not addressed in time.
Understanding liver failure what causes it, how it feels, and what it does to your body is the first step toward getting the right help at the right time.
What Exactly Is Liver Failure?
Liver failure is a serious condition in which the liver loses its ability to function normally. It does not happen overnight in most cases. The liver is a remarkably resilient organ it can continue working even when significantly damaged. But when the damage crosses a certain threshold, the liver can no longer keep up, and failure sets in.
There are two main types of liver failure. Acute liver failure develops rapidly sometimes within days or weeks often in people ...
... who had no prior liver disease. Chronic liver failure, on the other hand, develops slowly over months or years, usually as the end result of long-standing liver disease like cirrhosis or hepatitis.
Both types are serious. Both require immediate medical attention.
Liver Failure Causes: What Damages the Liver?
Understanding liver failure causes helps in both prevention and early detection. Some of the most common reasons the liver breaks down include:
Viral Hepatitis - Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are among the leading causes of liver failure in India. These viral infections cause inflammation that, over time, can lead to cirrhosis and eventually complete liver failure.
Alcohol Abuse — Long-term, excessive alcohol consumption is one of the most damaging things you can do to your liver. Alcoholic liver disease progresses silently fatty liver, then alcoholic hepatitis, then cirrhosis, and finally failure.
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) — Increasingly common in India due to rising obesity and diabetes rates, NAFLD can progress to a more aggressive form called NASH, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure even in people who never drink alcohol.
Autoimmune Liver Disease — Sometimes the immune system mistakenly attacks the liver, causing progressive damage that can lead to failure if left untreated.
Medications and Toxins — Overdose of certain medications — including paracetamol and exposure to industrial chemicals or herbal toxins can cause acute liver failure relatively quickly.
Genetic Conditions — Conditions like Wilson's disease and haemochromatosis cause toxic substances to accumulate in the liver over time, eventually leading to failure.
What Does Liver Failure Feel Like?
The symptoms of liver failure can be easy to dismiss in the early stages — fatigue, mild nausea, and a general sense of feeling unwell. But as the condition progresses, the signs become harder to ignore.
Common symptoms include persistent yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), swelling in the abdomen due to fluid buildup (ascites), confusion or difficulty thinking clearly (hepatic encephalopathy), dark-coloured urine, easy bruising or unexplained bleeding, and extreme fatigue that does not go away with rest.
Hepatic encephalopathy — the mental confusion caused by toxin buildup — is one of the most alarming signs. When the liver cannot filter ammonia and other waste products from the blood, they reach the brain and affect cognitive function.
Liver Failure Treatment: What Are the Options?
Liver failure treatment depends on the type and severity of the condition. In early or mild cases, treatment focuses on removing the underlying cause — stopping alcohol, treating the viral infection, or addressing the medication causing damage. Supportive care in a hospital setting helps stabilise the patient while the liver attempts to recover.
However, in advanced or acute cases where the liver cannot recover on its own, a liver transplant becomes the only life-saving option. This is where experienced specialists make all the difference.
Dr Prashant Kadam is a highly regarded liver transplant and HPB surgeon known for managing complex liver failure cases with precision, compassion, and a deep commitment to patient outcomes. Families facing a liver failure diagnosis find reassurance in knowing that expert, experienced care is available.
Do Not Wait — Act Early
Liver failure is serious, but it is not always a death sentence, especially when caught and treated early. The liver has an extraordinary capacity to heal itself in the right conditions. What it needs is timely intervention, the right specialist, and a treatment plan built around your specific situation.
If you or someone you love is experiencing any of the symptoms described above, please do not wait. Seek medical advice immediately. Early action saves lives and in the case of liver failure, it truly can make all the difference.
