Why Dry Months Are Best For Kilimanjaro Trekking
Mount Kilimanjaro is a popular hiking destination among outdoor enthusiasts around the world. Choosing the right time of year to hike will have an impact on that trip. For example, you should plan your hike during dry months, as this means that you will experience clear blue skies, firm hiking trails, and great views.
You can also prepare yourself for Kilimanjaro by climbing a smaller mountain first. Mount Meru will allow you to do this through a three-day hike, giving you the chance to experience the high altitudes of Kilimanjaro without committing to a long trip. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know.
Why the Dry Season Works Best
There are two dry seasons on Mount Kilimanjaro:
- The first dry season extends from January through to the end of March.
- The second dry season runs from June through to the end of October.
During the dry seasons, conditions for ttrekking Mount Kilimanjaro in the dry season are ideal. The sky is typically clear with limited ...
... rainfall; the trails are usually easier to hike; and there won't be any muddy or slippery sections of trails. All of this contributes to a more level and less taxing hike on your feet, the shoe, and lower soaked clothing.
Clear visibility allows for great scenery from the respective higher camps, including views of vast plains, trees, and clouds hanging beneath you. The summit night experience is enhanced by the large number of stars visible in the sky.
Even though it is possible for the night temperature to fall significantly below freezing during these seasons, it always feels easier to tolerate when it's cold and dry than when it is wet and cold. The right equipment will allow you to stay warm and dry regardless of the temperature outside.
What to Expect on Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro is not a technical rock climb; there are no ropes or tools required for climbing the mountain. Even though it is not a technical climb, it is a serious hike.
The most difficult thing about climbing Kilimanjaro is the altitude. As you go higher up the mountain, the air becomes thinner, and it takes time for your body to get used to the new elevation. Therefore, there are a minimum of 6-8 days to complete all of the routes.
A slow pace will help you reach the summit. Guides say "pole pole," which means "slow," and that is the best way to reach the summit of the mountain.
The dry seasons will be busy as many people will choose to hike during those months, which may result in sharing trails and camps with other climbers; however, Kilimanjaro is a large mountain, so you will have the opportunity to find quiet moments.
3 Days Mount Meru Climbing: A Smart Warm-Up
Mount Meru is not as tall as Mount Kilimanjaro, but with an elevation above 4,500m it will provide a tough but rewarding climbing experience. 3 Days Mount Meru Climbing will allow you to be well prepared for your body.
Day 1(forest walk): There is a lot of life around you as you walk through some of the densest forest that you will experience on your journey. You also may have the opportunity to see some of the native animals, including giraffes and monkeys.
The path up to your first night camp is reasonable and not too difficult. You will be at your first camp by late afternoon.
Day 2(steep climbing): The second day of your trek will be more challenging than your first. The trail begins to rise quite a bit and become more rocky. The air also becomes thinner as you make your ascent.
You will have many great views as you ascend; on clear days, you will be able to see Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Your second camp will be located high and will be exposed to the wind. Therefore, you should expect cold temperatures at night.
Day 3(summit push and descent): You will wake up early for the summit push, but it is well worth it! The trail to the summit can be fairly steep and narrow, which makes the climb much more challenging than the first two days of your trip.
Once you are at the summit, you can look down into the crater and then out at the other peaks surrounding you from a distance.
You will also want to descend back down to the second camp the same day, which can be a bit long; however, your sense of accomplishment from reaching the summit will make the descent much more pleasurable.
Final Thoughts
The dry season gives you the best shot at a safe and clear climb on Kilimanjaro. Good weather means better views and easier trails.
Adding a 3 Days Mount Meru Climbing makes your trip even stronger. It prepares your body and mind.
Take your time. Pack smart. Walk slow. The mountain rewards patience.
If you plan it right, this trip becomes more than a climb. It stays with you long after you come down.
